Diamond cut alloy wheel. Touch up?

Morning all.

A few weeks ago I was forced off the road by a car that was being chased by the police and was coming towards me in the opposite direction at high speed. And because of this I hit the kerb with quite a lot of force and both of my passenger side diamond cut alloys were badly scratched, especially around the chrome polished edges. So I got them repaired under my cars insurance, job done.

However, yesterday while parking the car and trying to manoeuvre into a space my front tyre touched and slightly rubbed against the kerb. Nothing unusual with that I thought, that was until I got home.

Why, because on the exact same front alloy wheel that has only recently been refurbished, there was a lovely scratch right along the mirror polished edging on the diamond cut alloy wheel. And to say that I'm gutted Is an understatement.

But what gets to me is that, the side of the tyre does not fit flush with the wheels but instead protrudes about 1/4" from the edging of the alloy wheel. So I can't understand how at such a low speed while parking the edge of the alloy wheel has got so badly scratched.

But I had a tin of chrome wheel paint in the garage, and looking at the chrome coloured lid on the spray cans lid the colour looked ideal to touch up the kerbed scratched alloy.

However, the paint is more of a grey colour than It Is mirror/chrome coloured. So I was just wondering If anyone could recommend a decent paint that will actually be more of a chrome colour with a mirror finish and will therefore blend in a bit better with the polished mirror edging on the alloy wheel.

Here are a couple of photos showing the kerbed alloy and the paint that I used to try and touch It up 😞

I fixed some marks like that on my diamond cut alloys on my Leon Cupra 280 a good few years back. I first rubbed down the damaged area with wet & dry paper, starting with a rougher grade and working down to finer. Then out came the trusty tube of Solvol Autosol and using that paste I polished out the last of the damage, I then covered with some lacquer and it looked great.

@motormadmarc - it’s so annoying when alloy wheel kerb damage happens; even more so when you’ve recently had that wheel (plus one other) refurbished. Unfortunately, I don’t think you’ll find a paint that’ll be a particularly good match to a bare metal diamond cut / polished surface. If you were trying to match a painted surface, then you‘d probably have greater success.

The method outlined by @Seastormer is what I’d try - assuming the kerb scratches aren’t too deep to be removed using appropriate grades of wet and dry paper.

Good luck - I hope you get it sorted with good results 🤞.
