the new cupra standard will outrun a rs focus, let alone a st, surely?

my 150 diesel has had my friends rs focus a few times....clearly not from a standing start, but once rolling over 30 i can gain through the sheer torque that the pd unit delivers..but being a good boy i dont speed so tend to back off early!

another friend just bought a 106 GTi and i am quite frankly blown away at how quick these things are!

must admit the lcr is very deceptive for speed, if you were doing 80 in a saxo and 80 in the lcr the leon would feel slower.

i think its all about power delivery too, the lcr smallish turbo spools early and is fairly progressive so you dont feel the punch you get with say an ihi of the impreza. think this is why people like the revo remap as it spikes the boost so you feel the kick.

as a starting point the lcr for price is a good car, all depends what you want form a car too,

if you do want a pocket rocket then the best is a toyota glanza, 1.3 turbo 130bhp ish and weigh less than 900kg iirc. very tunable too haha

Your standard? No chance!
There is no way in hell that a sub 190bhp diesel Leon is going to sit with a Focus RS.
Maybe a 30-50mph Sprint in 3rd and thats it!

Used to have a stripped out VTS(pretty much the same car) used it on road and then track, was pretty quick, manifold, decat and single box system and green stuff forced air induction kit.
Would kick the arse a few bigger things but never anythin like a Cupra R or Focus RS.

youve got to be careful when you say "kept up with"

i remember being shocked that my lc matched .. kept up with.. a skyline. it was for all of 2 seconds:happy: but still impressive.
but you cant really compare the two.
a remapped lc will get off the line as fast if not faster than my 320bhp lc.. first 40ft the remapped may even be ahead.... cant claim it`ll keep up though as in the next second my lc has left it for dust.

as a standard car im not sure how it fairs against others. its a family hatchback with a hot engine but very understeery set up.
the real plus with the lc is the platform and engine responds so well to tweaking. thats its trump card.

Watched an old Top Gear (on Dave) that included VW GTI Mk5 test. After usual test-track antics & salvoes of metaphors, it cut to studio with a line-up of GTI's rivals & a chart listing their Stig-helmed lap times:

Civic Type-R (mk1): 1:32.8

LCR: 1:32.9 [B)]

GTI (Mk5): 1:33.7

Megane 225: 1:34.0 :fool:

Cooper S Works: 1:34.2 :cartman:

Citroen C4 VTS: 1:35.8

Intrigued, & chuffed, to note that the LCR's time was so competitive - especially against the CTR, GTI & S Works - condsidering its so-so power-to-weight (why is the LCR so fecking heavy - 1375kg?!) & lack of IRS. Maybe that splitter actually has some aero/grip benefits? :D

honestly! he was going for it! he was 3 up at the time..so thats another 200kg easily, but still...anyway i dont race so backed off quickly enough! his focus is a 2002 model i think, they are horrible inside, they rattle, very cheap plastic etc.

i believe the diesel units have a distinct advantage with the torque that they deliver, alot of cars can get caught out in the 40-70 range... petrol doesnt have that huge advantage anymore! still has the advantage though :)

Well you know my oppinion, having been an owner of a Golf GTTDI 130PD - mapped to 178bhp i know the PD engines are very capable but my mapped golf would just do a 15.1 1/4 mile whereas if you look at Focus RS 1/4's then you'll see a diff, same goes for track conditions and the exact same is seen.

Yeh the Derv will "keep up" but 2 of you going for it and you sitting there for 10mph isn't keeping up, you need to be side by side or very close to it from 0 to speeds that will land you in jail - Silly!

i dont race, i have a family of police so doing that sort of testing will never happen..
anyway we all know that from a standing start these type of cars would eat the leon pd alive_ all im saying is that from my experience from 40-70 there was not much in it :)

The old in gear argument, 30-70 and diesel torque bla bla bla.

At the end of the day, there is a lot more to comparing two cars than magazine number tests from speed a to speed b.

Take a Leon Cupra TFSi vs a remapped Leon TFSi. 0-60mph is gonna be all but identical due to less grip on the remapped car, but more go when traction becomes available. After 60mph, the remapped car is gonna be off like a scalded cat.

The old Civic Type R vs 150PD argument always pops up now and again as well with in gear times. The thing is though you dont use low revs in a VTEC car so the mag tests are no good. Just because 30-50 or whatever is faster in a specific gear in a 150PD than a CTR, its not to say the CTR is slower as they would be 2 gears down using VTEC.

One thing I have noticed in my time is that ultimately, power dictates the big boys from the wee boys. Normally it takes high speeds in gear 3 and higher to see what is actually faster rather than opportune blasts off the line or in traffic.

The only way you can compare striaght line performance legally and safely is at the likes of a 1/4 mile strip. Then you know the other car is trying, and times to a set distance and speed at that time really does show which is quicker.
