2021 model VZ car has 125000km, Was losing water a few months ago. Not much, maybe 250ml every 2 -3 months. Took it in and they said water pump needed doing so had it done but warning light came on the other day and still looks to be losing water at same rate?? What else could it be? Seems its very rare for Ea888 to do a head gasket from looking online.

Was the thermostat housing also changed when you had the water pump replaced? Both the water pump and thermostat housing on VAG’s EA888 engine are weak points when it comes to cooling system leaks and both are prone to fail.
No the thermostat was not done. Should they be done at the same time normally? Is is cheaper to do them at the same time or are they in different locations
It’s commonplace for both the water pump and thermostat housing to be replaced at the same time on the 2.0 EA888 engine. I believe the water pump bolts onto the plastic thermostat housing, so there ought to be a saving in labour costs if both are replaced at the same time.
