Tyres for power/hard road/trackdays?

OK, so what tyres are people using for their cars making over 300bhp? I need better tyres, but they have to be able to cope with the odd trackday and 1/4 mile as well.

I'm interested in the Yokohama Parada's but I hear they are pants in the wet?

I've had Hankook RS2's before and they were really good, Camskill recommend them for road and track use. Toyo R1R's are too expensive.

I had paradas on my IHI Ibiza and they were fine in the wet. You wouldnt be able to drive it aggresively but they were fine for normal driving. Really not like most people had said they would be ie bad in the wet.

Stay away from the Parada's. Worst tyres I have ever had and binned them after a few months. Rubbish in the dry and even worse in the wet. No control or feel with them. Ive run R888's on the cupra ever since and never looked back. Great road tyre in the dry as they heat up fairly quick and still great in the wet. Just bad in standing water and they tend to get too hot on track days.

Yet to try the R1R's, but they will probably be going on my new car. Also heard good things about the Hankooks. What tyre size do you need? 225/40/18's?

Yes, 225/40/18's. I've had Hankook RS2's before and they were brilliant, but they've gone up in price from £99 a tyre to £124 each from Camskill. Mytyres were showing them for £107 a tyre but they've disappeared off their site now (in that size) so I'm guessing they're out of stock.

I asked Camskill to match the price of Mytyres but haven't gotten a reply.

Anyone heard of the Maxxis MA-Z1 Drift? Apparently they grip more as they get hotter and don't chunk off, melt or delaminate when hot.

Other tyres worth mentioning are the Dunlop Sport Maxx TT and the Continental ContactSport 3 - both found on lots of high-end sports cars. The new Focus RS has the SC3's on it. The Dunlops have kevlar reinforced sidewalls.

We run 888's on the Pug, and in perfect conditions, ie Dry, the tyres performed excellently, tremendous levels of grip. They definitly have the reputation of being the "best" track day tyres, but i cant help thinking that there must be better cheaper alternatives out there, that dont get quite as much hype as the 888's.

Really? Most of the people I asked said exactly the same but I really didnt find this at all. My car was my daily and went on a few thrash days and was fine. I didnt try and push it in the wet as it was pointless but they never gave me any problems with normal driving in the wet. On dry days they gripped well and were good at letting you know when they were about to let go. They do go abit like gum when they get very hot but had alot of grip. What made me go with the Paradas was somebody I know had them on their corrado and when I questioned them about them they took me out and showed me what they were like.

Are R888 still made? I was looking at them but was told for a daily I would hate them and if I wanted to use them on track then I should get a spare set of wheels to run them on.

Allen run GYE F1 Asymmetrics the last time he was at Crail with 350 ish BHP and had no problem launching off the line.
He also had these the last time on RR and got traction no bother with 364BHP and 340 ft-lbs.

I'm sure you'll remember what his car was like with the Ultrac seseanta's, not good, with zero traction.

I loved the Asymmetrics on the track but side wall was a but soft for going through the chiane at KH at maximum attack but apart from that grip was great.

Sounds good Willie, I heard the Dunlop SP SPort Maxx GT have aramid in them to resist heat.

So the Goodyear F1 Assymetric and Dunlop SPort Maxx GT are both good tyres for road/track. Camskill sell the GD F1 Ass for £100 a tyre but have no stock at present, the Dunlops are £115 each.

Toss up between these two I think. :D

Allen had them from standard and hated them.
Seemingly Scoobies swear by them but often wonder about how compedant some of them really are.
The MK2's come from factory with them

No, but are they not standard fit on the civic type r's? I fitted some of the hankooks to a customers golf mk6 gti yesterday and even from cold and being brand new i thought they were really good. After a few runs they started to work better too. I think he paid around £110 each for them through blackcircles.

Well my 3 final choices are Goodyear F1 Assy at £100 each, Dunlop Maxx GT at £120 each and Hankook RS2 at £125 each. Given the £5 difference I'd go Hankook RS2 so that leaves 2 - Goodyears or Hankooks - £400 or £500, quite a difference in price.

I still love the Falken FK452's though, loads of grip on the road.

Yes, had RS2's a while ago, awesome tyres but they've gone up in price by £25 a tyre, plus Hankook have announced the RS3 so the RS2's won't be made anymore soon.

I think I'll try the Goodyear F1 Assymetrics, £100 cheaper.
