I've owned both. 316i (company car) and Ibiza.

When you drive a beemer, you realise how many of the bloody things are on the road. It will drive you nuts!

With the beeza, you can have hours of entertainment trying to:

a) spot another beeza
b) spot a nice beeza
c) spot a disgusting coloured beeza
d) spot the crashed beeza
e) spot the broken down beeza ... haven't noticed one yet in 84000 miles.
f) spot the beeza with spanish plates
g) spot the FR
h) spot the Cupra
i) wonder for 3 hours if g or h is the best car

I'm being silly now .. but serious don't!

No, BMW were very clever. They bought an ailing car company, released the 75, refreshed the ranges, changed the names so that they could plan the 1 and 6 series without getting done for copyright theft, ran it for a few years and realised the only profitable thing left was Mini so they signed that over to the profitable side. The new Mini has been a great seller for BMW and any other manufacturer looking back would've done the same. It hadn't been profitable from the 70s so you can't blame BMW for everything.

How can you be devoid of imagination for choosing a car thats built well, has a great range of engines that other manufacturers are too scared to release, RWD and 50:50 weight distribution in whatever bodyshape you choose? I think thats a very good imaginatrion to have, certainly beats all the other FWD generic boxes there are out there.

i'd back that, BMW really are at the next level and to be honest you could never compare a SEAT with a BMW. Oh and SEAT could learn a little from BMW on how to do sports stuff for owners. You only have to look how BMW have done John Cooper Works stuff for Minis. Also BMW lay on huge owners gatherings for Mini owners such as Mini United 2007 which saw them debut new models exclusively to existing owners.

As for the Tdi, yep 120D is a great car and dynamicaly the 120D is the best of the range, the 130i is good but then thats another 10k on top. But i would also look at the 320D and if something sporty is required a 330D both have very long legs and would suit longer miles, oh and the engines are just as if not more bullett poof than the VAG Tdi units as long as you service em right

Quite easily. The general car buying public of this country are imaginativeless
sheep who will flock to buy whatever the latest thing they are told to drive by the press and their peers is (Mini!, 4x4 etc)
But hey, thats just my opinion.

Seat do sports events for owners in spain. BMW also do trackdays where people can come along and drive BMW's around the track, but they never let the public push them anywhere near their limits. However with VAG, and specififcally audi people are.

Id agree though that you could not really compare a BMW to a Seat mainly due to price difference and the fact that all the sporty seats we get are FWD!

A 20k seat will give a 20k bmw a spanking though.

Only thing I could criticise bmw with regards to the mini for is the pricing/standard equipment.
I don't know about anyone else but when your spending £16k on a cooper s you would expect that it would come with air conditioning as standard, but no... its a ~£650 option or ~£825 for climate control. On board trip computer is a £110 option there is lots of stuff that you would expect to come as standard but doesn't, they expect everyone to spent £2k on the chili pack which includes these options and a few more:
sports leather steering wheel,
17" alloys,
xenon lights.

I think the mini is a great car but how many people can honestly say its worth spending £16k on a cooper s and another £2k on options to bring its equipment up to that of an Ibiza FR nevermind Cupra.

Oh, and the fact that when you spec up a mini its very easy to go over £19k especially if you spec for the body kit. When the JC Works engine mod kit is releashed for the newer mini prices will easily go over £21k, and my question is how can bmw justify mini's costing this much when you could buy a new 3door 120d M Sport fully loaded, full leather interior etc for ~£23.5k.
