Have you checked your cam timing? My fr diesel did the same white smoke at idle strong smell. Rough jumpy idle poor cold starts.
Adjusted front cam from +2.2 to -0.35 this stopped the poor cold starts. Rear exhaust cam should be set between 0.4-0.6 l/h are idle. Mine was set at 0.93l/h.
Now runs great starts first time no judder and no white smoke.

Mine does this gives out white smoke but only when car is started say first thing in the morning especially when its cold and goes once you drive off, doesnt do it when stationary after that. Start it up after that through the day its ok. Mines had injectiors replace also had dpf delete.

Well had mine on vagcom yesterday and the only result was he thought the maf reading was a little high which could be the cause of the problem, on tickover at running temperature its reading about 11g/sec and it should be between 4 and 7. Thing is I've tried my dads 58 passat tdi and the readings on his is 10ish so not 100% sure if thats whats causing my problem. But he said the dpf readings where ok so at least i can rule that out (i think) and there was no other faults which i knew anyway apart from "insufficient airflow across egr" which i already knew about as i put gasket with a smaller hole in at the egr valve to reduce the amount of exhaust gases that get recirculated.
If anyone with with the 2.0 tdi 170 pd engine has access to vagcom or the torque app and could check their maf values for me just so i can compare the same engine as mine as there might be some variation in mine and my dads passat because his is the cr 140(mapped to 180ish) i would be grateful.

I have to say I took the easy option and changed the car so am still in the dark as to what the problem actually was, traded it in a year ago and got a newer cr model, touch wood no problems upto now. :)

Mines come back again. So im gonna book it in to seat to see if they can see why. Its imbarrasing having it in traffic. But I have noticed its poor at starting if left for a few days

Mine was never any bother starting, it was just the smoke on idle, ticking over for any more than a few minutes and you could see the smoke starting to build up behind the car and then you could smell it, the smoke got gradually worse and yes embarrassing so I know how you feel mate until I pulled away, there would be a lot of smoke and it would but would clear as I was driving. All the symptoms of turbo oil seals apart from it never used any oil from one service to the next. If someone had said to me, "yep had that problem before and its (?)" I would have kept the car and got it sorted but it was just the fact I was going to have pay so much to get one thing done then it might not have been that then move onto the next thing. I saw a newer cr model for decent money and still under warranty so bit the bullet and traded my old one in.

Hello,

I have the same problem : plumes of white smoke on idle occasionally, only when engine is warming up.. Poor starting also.

Injectors and seals have been replaced, timming checked, turbo cleaned, tandem pump seal replaced.

I still smell burning oil from the heater... maybe a have a leak somewhere that is contributing this.

Does anyone have a clue??

Thanks.

I would say it's an injector issue or a possible over fuelling problem on idle.

I have read a few comments on here about turbo seals, turbos do not have seals. Very old turbos did but modern turbos do not have them. They have one silicone O-ring that doesn't fail and that is just for the join between the two housing of the turbo.

I think i have some kind of leak behind the engine, near the turbo...
I get some oil burning smell from there and it's the same smell that gets inside cabin... it's more pronounced when engine is warming...

After I had my timing belt replaced mine done this, loads of blue and white smoke and idling rough, turns out the exhaust cam needed adjusting, took it's to a vag specialist and they sorted it no problem, other garages didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Do a bit of searching on here aswell as briskoda forum. I'm assuming it's a pd170 tdi?

Av heard someone mention the exhaust cam? How's it adjusted? To what settings? Also how much did it cost? I get this on start up not as bad as some of the videos av seen but it's still there.

From what I remember you can never get it perfect but you need to get it as close to 0 as you can. There's loads of threads on here about it, that's where I got most of the information from. It cost me £70 and he done it while I waited, he said it's something that is easily missed when changing the timing belt as it slips without the person even realising.
