Hi guys

Just joined the forum now as I'm having the same trouble with the White smoke and lumpy idle! Just wondering whether anybody managed to sort yours out? I've had 3 mechanics look at mine and every one was stumped as to what it could be!

Also my Eml light comes on and goes off on occasion and I've had it plugged in and it's points to the exhaust gas pressure sensor, although this has been replaced twice by previous owners!

Can anyone help? It's a 58 plate fr tdi by the way! Cheers

Has the timing belt been changed recently?
It occurred for me after I'd had mine replaced, the exhaust cam had slipped when the belt was being fitted, this obviously caused the timing to be slightly out. I took it back to the garage and they assured me the timing was correct but I done ALOT of research on forums to diagnose the problem and took it to a VAG specialist and he fixed it whilst I waited.

Looked like it, didn't take the belt off, just slackened it and used the adjustment bolts on the cam I think

I think it's all down to timing, mine smoked like a ******* after a DPF delete and then when I had the belt and water pump done all the smoke stopped, it was a grayish white smoke.
I still get this warm oily smell at the bottom of the windscreen and sometimes through the heating but with 170,000 miles on the clock she deserves to stink a bit, with age and milage I'm starting to smell a bit funny too!!!! :ban:

The cold starts of late have become annoying.

Hi fellas,

Quick update on my situation, I hadmy car at a garage for the best part of three weeks and on the last day we found the problem! Anyway, we had the egr valve off and the inlet manifold as they were blocked and stuck with carbon deposits and soaked them in believe it or not Mr muscle! Which freed up all the parts, put them back on and it was still smoking! Anyway we put it on a vag and tried to sort it that way but nothing!!!!

A guy then comes round and says take every sensor off relating to the exhaust and give them a good clean, did so put them back on on and hey presto!!

All for £100

Hope it helps guys!

Thank you for your feedback.

As far as i can see you only had white smoke+lumpy idle? No strong/acrid smell from exhaust?
White smoke+lumpy idle was cured on mine after engine timming was corrected, this is very important on these engines.

About the strong exhaust smell i still have it and I think i might have a clue about the problem:
I've read a post from a french guy that found the issue to be a problem with defective valve seals which were letting oil into combustion chamber and burning it with diesel...

Hi
No I had the strong smell as well, forgot to mention earlier that the timing was out as well and was adjusted!

So the strong smell disappeared after cleaning exhaust sensors? Hmm...
Will try that, can you tell me which ones did you clean?? DPF sensors?

Thanks for the help!

Hi

I don't know which ones he took off, I think it was the pressure sensors and anything related to the exhaust, BEFORE it hits the dpf!

I know it didn't take him long though if that helps lol
