My hubby has tinted the rear lights on 3 or 4 of our cars himself (one of which is his current car - A4), and its always looked great and you couldnt tell the difference if they were bought. When I had an Escort Xr3i (late Mk5) I didnt want to tint the whole lights, so he just masked off the red and sprayed the orange and reverse light so they were half red half black, it turned out perfect. He's also done something similar with his Audi.
He got the tinting spray from the likes of Halfords, then just follwed the instructions on the tin. Obviously mask everything off first around the lights, then layer the paint (as says on the tin) until you get the depth of tint you like. Be careful, its very easy to go too dark so just take it slowly, oh and you cant let it dry either and then add more. He's never sanded the lights or anything else, and the paint has always stayed put just fine and continued to look great.
We've also seen that you can now buy a spray for removing the tint, so if you do **** up you can get that then try again. Or even cheaper hubby says you can use a bit of petrol to get it off.
