Aye, but the insurance company would then give me market value, which is 18k! And I'd be back where I started. I could sell it back to Arnold Clark for that tomorrow and not have to risk prison....

I feel for you mate, but you can just call it a very expensive learning curve.

Never buy a car you're going to live with without a 24 hour test drive at the very least. And living in Newcastle I try and take it when its hoying down so I know what its going to drive like for 2/3rd of the year.

If you're truly sick just put it up on autotrader, you'll lose out a few quid to advertise it and have to deal with time wasters but you'll get a better feel for its worth than selling back to the garage.

Also the insurance will only give back market value? You should have return to invoice for the first year and GAP insurance on that mate! Not that I'd condone insurance fraud.

I'll explain, shall I? This car is both my first ever new car and my first SEAT. It is specifically SEAT dealers and, to an extent, my SEAT car that I think are rubbish. This is a forum for SEAT enthusiasts/owners, so I'm hardly going to join a Mercedes forum to bitch about my car, as where would that get me? Nearly all of these one marque forums are full of people wearing blinkers who think their car/make of car is the best thing ever and get all uppity when someone like me and the OP come along and say it might not be the bestest car ever, but for every blinkered fool getting the arse with my posts there could be someone reading who is considering buying a SEAT. If I can put just one of those readers off doing just that then I'll consider my time spent here worthwhile!
I'm not saying Seats are the best car, they have issues like any other manufacturer. How they deal with such issues is a mark of how good (or bad) they are.
I've owned many makes of car over the years, some good, some bad. Dealers equally so and its not marque dependant either.
The question still stands though. What made you decide to buy a Seat, particularly a Leon? If you can illustrate your reasoning for buying one , maybe anyone reading will not use the same reasoning and hence not make the mistake you did.

I think its pretty clear from the thread. He thought it would grip. Corner entry is daunting in his car. He thought the 4 wheel drive would be more effective, esp in the rain. He thought the MPG would be far nearer to advertised. He thought the steering would be better. The test drive didn't tease these issues out. He paid over the odds to Arnold Clark compounding some of the above. Also Simon has 'enjoyed' a poor standard of post dealer service. Not unique to Seat but in my experience more likely.

So Its not what he expected or Simon expected. Or Mr Lynch. Or no doubt others who have yet to comment. Not ticking the performance enjoyment box. I got that pretty easily just from reading the thread but then I don't have a Mk3 to defend.

Pretty much answered everything for me. I'm not saying it's a **** car, I'm just saying I don't like it and it's not doing what I was told it would by the dealer, Seat, the Internet videos, or magazines. I was expecting a faster car that didn't frustrate me immensely every time I use the go pedal in anger. I was expecting almost 400 miles from a full tank.

I was expecting, more. It's MY fault, not yours. But I don't need people telling me to man up. Or that I'm a spoiled brat or making a fuss. So there we are. I will get it advertised in the new year and see where we are.

400 miles is possible as I said before managed to get 400+ a few times now but your never going to get 400 doing lots of short journeys etc.

At the end of the day fella it's your choice. It's not for you so get rid when the right opportunity arises. Once it's in your head you'll never be right, been there wore the t-shirt and it's not a nice experience.

BTW there are some angry peeps on here !!!:handbags: I have a 1.8 TSI FR and I love it but I have owned a mk2 FR and hated it. Does that make me a Seat hater ??? not.

People feel the need to defend their own cars against criticism. In their eyes, I'm saying an Evo is better than a Leon. That's not what I'm saying, well, I actually am. But only with a diesel estate thrown in as a daily. Anyways.

Time to take the hit.

been there with a company cars I couldn't stand and just had to lump it.
It's a shame when it's your own money, and I feel for you, guys.

My last one was a Passat 1.6 105bhp. How I detested that car but I knew it was only for 3 years & hoped something better replaced it & it did. Agreed, it's bummer when it's your own money.........

You could always change the badges, the wings, the wheels, the suspension, the breaks, the body style, the floor plan..................
ah fook it pal, it will be easier to get another EVO, smile, enjoy driving and wave as you go by.:p or failing that, trade it for a Reliant Robin and REALY blow your mind.
Hope it works out for you fella, don't let it screw your xmas.

To everyone. I didn't expect it to grip like my Evo. I just expected it to be considerably better than it is.

I once had an Escort RS Turbo. They were a big deal once, and I had one that I spent loads on. 230bhp, and trust me, that was a HUGE deal back then. Magazine faetures etc. I took part in Performance Fords group 'thrash' with it. Now, when I had this car every time I looked out the window and saw rain, I was crestfallen, as this meant no fun in the RST. It's the same with this Cupra. I don't know if mine is broken, or you're all better at driving than me but when I see the wet roads I am ready for crying! It means I am not going out for a blast. You all have to understand, I have NO other hobby. I don't go down the pub, I don't play golf, dive, etc etc. It's just cars. And to have basically given all my money to Arnold Clark, and get something I feel is terrible in return, is crushing! I don't hate the car, it's very nice. Comfy, nice features, etc etc blah blah. But as a performance product, it's not up to scratch. I'm now stuck paying finance for the damn thing, and had I known this would lose value so fast I'd never have bought it! Someone said their 6 month old car was valued at 14k????? Madness! I should have bought an Alfa Romeo if I wanted to lose money that fast!!

I read the same reviews, and watched the same videos on the internet. I test drove one on a hot August afternoon. It was a 'short' test drive, and the salesman kept me away from the bendy stuff and stuck to the dual carrigeways, probably because it was the managers personal car and he didn't want me to wipe it out. Had I know what I know now, I;d not have touched it. I am not comparing this to the Evo, it doesn't compare AT ALL. The Evo was ballistic in all weathers. I am comparing this to my 138bhp diesel Passat. Which was slower, uglier, smellier, but had more front end grip with it's £65 Continetals than this thing does! I'm just gutted that it's doing none of the stuff I was expecting it to do, while at the same time it's now worthless! I wish I'd bought mine on PCP, because that way I'd still have the money I gave Arnold as the 50% deposit. But now, as it stands, I'll have about 5k back IF I'm LUCKY.

I'm not trying to tell you all your cars are ****. Just that it's not the car I thought it would be. It doesn't live up the hype. :(

It's not just your car that has lost it's value, ALL new cars lose a massive amount as soon as you drive it out the showroom, a new car sold early will ALWAYS be a big loss, just economics. By the time they get to 3 to 5 years old, sporty SEATS actually retain a higher percentage of their new value than a lot of so called premium makes, I know I have done it several times with previous Cupra's.

Didnt read the whole thread, but i can tell new cars have more fuel consumption until the engine complete its "roadage", a car like cupra wont give fuel economy like 5.5liters/100km until you use speed limiter, you better expect 7-8liters per 100km.

About the steering, nearly all new cars have "electric steering" which kills the joy of driving esp. at high speed corners maybe you should try the new scirocco which has new type of electric steering with hydrolic system.

The tyres can make a lot difference, stick with the known brands.

I had a saab 9-5 Aero HOT, which had 250bhp through the fronts, and it was a bitch in the wet. Tried Pirelli P-Zeros, Contis, Michelins - nothing gripped in the wet under high throttle openings, especially when down to 5mm tread. It understeered like mad, tramping/spinning on pulling away, thumping over bumps and potholes.
great in the dry and on smooth roads, but hard work to love otherwise.
that's high power and FWD.
4WD better in the wet - hence the Evo being so much "better".

You're selling the car and want to minimise the hit, you have to sell private.

The fact is that trade will never offer you as much money as a private sale could because they need to make money when they sell it on, private sale is your only option if you want to recoup as much as possible, this obviously adds time though as you'll need to wait for that right buyer.
