My HU has a reverse camera port at the back but how do I make it show up on screen when reverse is selected?

I would say when a camera is connected to the HU then you select reverse it should just come on unless you have to select it on your HU yourself.

Now you've done a guide I'm mega tempted to have a go at this myself instead of a bog standard camera.

The way you have done it overcomes one of the biggest problems with reversing cameras. Dirt! Since its hidden until you need it I imagine it won't get anywhere near as dirty as proper OEM cameras on vehicles.

This is the cam http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0042S19Q0/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1359226243&sr=8-10&pi=SL75

on first impressions, for a tenner i couldnt go wrong

its not wide angle either, so decent quality.
it has guide lines which are handy, if you havnt got a point of reference, for example, im fitting it on the inside of the very upper part of the tailgate, looking down, the bumper is visble and wiper also lol.

i have the kenwood dnx520vbt thats sold in the dealers

it has a CAM input which enables CAM when you put in reverse. Or you can hold down the function button and it pops up when driving.

strangly, the camera worked without the negative/earth connected, but ill connect it anyway.

I was considering putting one in on the bumper, between the number plate lights, but then I need to get the cables through into the car, then run a positive to the reversing light (unless I can find out which cable is the reversing one and splice into it without having to wire it through the boot lid), alternatively it's on all the time. Unless I'm missing something really simple?

There is a bung on the drivers side underneath behind the bumper can't miss it, if you go through there it leads into the boot behind the carpet panel. Reverse wire is grey n white if I remember. You don't have to go to the reverse light for it. Rear end roof lining passenger side you can access the wires from there if needed.

Did you not connect yours to the reverse light positive then?

Yes I connected mine to the reverse light itself as my camera wires come from my boot badge. I had to Run the camera cable from there to my HU that's how I know that the wires are just at the roof lining. Your best option is to unclip the rubber which the wires run through from the boot it should make it a lot easier, rather than pulling your roof lining down to gain access.

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure why but the video cable from the camera to head unit seems to have a positive cable attached to it. As well as the normal +/- cable too

Is that so that the HU view/power up the camera when your not in reverse ? Did you get a wiring diagram with the camera ?
