It appears to be trickier than I thought.

The most up to date software for the Navigon is 7.10.25.

The lowest available software version for the Garmin is 7.11.22

The only way to trick Fresh into updating is to tell it that your device has 7.11.22. The software update process doesn't seem to be a direct data dump onto the device so it doesn't like that it thinks it's going 7.11.22 -> 7.13.9 rather than 7.10.25 -> 7.13.9.

As mentioned previously there are also problems flashing the bluetooth module. It's possible the new device has a slightly different bluetooth module so the firmware is incompatible. That's the kind of thing that could lead to permanent bricking of at least he bluetooth.

Someone with more experience with Windows CE based devices may be able to get further than me. What I'm trying to do now is manually update whatever part of the software contains the gauges as this seems to be the main thing people are after. I'll see how it goes.

Awesome.

Did you manage to find the temp dump location navigon fresh puts the 7.13.9 data during the upgrade procedure? Couldn't find it on the mac but might be easier on windows but am too lazy to bootcamp. Like you said if we can get the gauges on 7.10.25 that would be good!

I'm on a mac too.

So far I've updated to 7.13.9 then taken a dump so I have all the updated executables then restored from a backup.

I'm just about to PM a link to the 7.10.25 files (without maps). Some of these are personalised with my device number etc but hopefully it could help to at least get you to be able to factory reset.

A quick update

Some photos and explanations of what's been going on in my flat...

^ That was a failed attempt to identify and flash the bluetooth chip. Don't be alarmed, no sat navs were harmed in the making of these photos.

The current plan is to identify where the additional gauges are stored and crowbar them into the 7.10.25 software. There doesn't seem to be a huge difference in the software but the location of the gauges isn't obvious. I have narrowed down a couple of areas where they could be but it is still a case of going through files one by one and hoping they don't break the thing.

Some things I have found.

A file called UserSettingsTubes.default holds the user configuration for the gauges (or "Tubes" apparently...)

This is the 7.10.25 file:

This is the 7.13.9 file:
7.13.9.png

That still doesn't mean I've found the gauges! I've found other things like enabling a dev mode which doesn't seem to do too much without additional hardware except a gauge test (similar to the VCDS instrument cluster test).

Replacing some executables have caused crashes on the device so I hope the gauges aren't compiled with them. If that's the case this isn't going to happen without a lot more work from someone with more hardware mojo than me.

I'll keep plodding through the files!

Looks promising Mark! You're brave for stripping your unit to bits though ha. Although you've said it crashed when replacing some exes does it show the gauges?

Also forgot to message you but those files you sent worked a treat so thanks again :funk:

Ah right that sucks. Is there a Windows CE sandbox/emulator available? Might be easier for testing plus would keep your navigon safe.

Ps just noticed our avatars look very similar haha.

That may be more useful for getting the actual 7.13.9 software running. I'll look at doing that if I can't find where the gauges are.

I keep thinking I've said something I haven't because of the avatars!

Props to Mark for taking the unit apart there lol. It was me who wrote the thread about it on ibiza oc btw.

No idea why the Navigon system won't support the new software though, maybe the hardware in the two systems is different? Why though?

Hey guys, I got it.

Warning: you'll void your warranty!

Working:
- GPS Fix (until now I hadn't the chance to test navigation)
- Media from sdcard

Not Working:
- Bluetooth (music, internet, phone > ALL!)
- Doesn't see the new tubes on status screen
- Error message with WolfSpecial.dll on restart

Video: www . youtube . com/watch?v=yJuTro9KutY

How To:
1. create a backup of your exsting installation
2. format the filesystem
3. put the garmini zip (linked above) on the navigion
4. restart (don't worry the bluetooth firmware screen > just reset the device when its stucked - it will!)
5. start fresh and update it to newes version + one map (for testing purpose). In my case it was 7.13.10
6. quit fresh und go to the storage. Rename "BrandDevice.reg" to something different > "BranasddDevice.reg"
7. additional you can rename the "VwBrandDevice" to something different > "VwBranasddDevice"
8. (for seat starting screen) take the NAVIGON\skin_SEAT\MobileNavigator.res and put it in the NAVIGON directory. You have to override the existing MobileNavigator.res (vw starting screen).
9. open the root directory an dopen the "Watchdog_HW.ini". Search for following line "RebootIfCheckFails = false", change the false to true. This line exist in each [PartitionChecker_PartitionX]-block.
10. now you can restart the device. At the wolf error click OK. Then it will take a while.

Hope it helped you a little bit and sorry for my bad englich.

Thank you very much cuxx for this,

I followed your instructions carefully but still, the PID keeps on rebooting after the VW start screen... I don't understand.

- Are you sure that the ini file needs to be changed by replacing "false" by "true", not the inverse ?

- Do you think you can upload on dropbox the content of your PID (minus the map folder). So that we can have a more detailed look on what you've done.

- A suggestion : what happens if you replace the BT folder by the BT folder that was in the last version of the NAVIGON software ?

Thanks again

Antoine
