Remap gone wrong!

Hi all, gonna get straight to the point

Went to get my car remapped last night by 'NI Remapping'. The fella got to work straight away plugged in his computer to the car and collected some data off the ECU. He then sent this data to some fella over in England who approved it or something then sent him back the software to remap the car and put in a popcorn limiter and launch control.

Now this is the important bit. He was half way through writing the software onto the ecu when it stopped, he told me this had never happened before. He then had to travel home and get some other equipment. When he returned it also did not work. He then opened the Bonnet and removed the ECU completely. He then spent a while connecting the ECU to his laptop and my battery. After a while working at it, my mate for some stupid reason decided to lift the ECU and then the wires caught fire. He told me he might be able to get it fixed at home but then found that the ECU had been toasted and was scrap.

I am now in a pretty sticky situation. He tells me that I will need to buy a second hand ECU on eBay and fit it to the car. He said some people who sell them can remap them and I can send them my old ECUs data and they can write it on it and then when I get it I can just plug it in and work away.

So really I'm just asking for some advice. If anyone knows anyone who can get me an ECU or if there is an alternative method that would be a lot safer and is sure to work.

My car is a 1.4tdi seat ibiza 6L.

He also sent me the codes from my old ECU.

Sounds like a complete ****ing cowboy, what sort of plank ****s up a remap so bad the ECU catches fire???

Get a stock one, get it coded to the car and see if there is someone competent near you.

Thats what i was thinking, it was a very unprofessional job, at times he was phoning up someone from across the water for advice. I have the codes from the old ECU do you think it would be ok if i got a second hand one off ebay?

new ones are a rip off and cost the earth to get coded and think that i might have to get a new key etc

Thanks

Any ECU you get will need coding to the car, regardless if the part numbers match. Have a read of this: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Immobilizer_III_ECU_Swapping No new keys needed, just need to pair the ECU to the car.

Absolute amateur, EDC15P ECUs are the easiest ECUs to work on and can be recovered via OBD in almost every instance. I would be insisting that he replace it for a used one at his cost and then get it coded in elsewhere!

I've had an ECU write fail mid-way before now for reasons unknown but it was sorted within 10 minutes via OBD. Feel for you mate :( Feel free to PM me if you need any help/advice

I asked him had he any insurance and he said he wouldn't need it. Turns out I got one for £150 off eBay which matches the codes on my old ECU. My brother was talking to the seller of the ECU and he said it should work and not need coded again and said that it should work as soon as it's been plugged in. So hopefully will have the car sorted in the next few days. Thanks

Yea he said he disabled the immobiliser so that it wouldn't need coded and the same old key would work

Yes if the EEPROM in the ECU has been edited to disable the immo then it will plug in and work..... But your key is useless and anybody could come along and hotwire your car in no time at all.... And you will need to inform your insurance company that you no longer have an immobiliser on the car

Cheers mate, just try to help out. Nothing that can't be found out from lots of reading/learning ;)

Personally i would prefer to have a working immo on the car and have it coded in properly. There are many people around the UK that can sort it out, there's a post on here somewhere listing VCDS users across the UK, there's a group called 'VCDS Users UK' on Facebook etc.

+1

In this day and age I certainly wouldn't want to be driving a car with no immobiliser. Also, expect your insurance premium to go through the roof once you've told them that the car no longer has an immobiliser on it.
