Radiator Top Hose/Radiator?

Ok so the radiator top hose that goes into the engine/top of rad (with a smaller diameter tube that goes to the expansion tank) keeps coming off on the engine side, sprayed water everywhere! was scary
the radiator moves at the top for some reason, so i have tie-clipped it to the slam panel, but the other day it done the same, is it the crappy jubilee clip? is it meant to have a pinch grip clip, or a screw-driver tightening one?

as i am gonna order a new top pipe from sere motors, so if you guys can tell me what clip to get instead (it's a 2.0 16v gti) :D

thanks!

(and i think the main cause is the broken leg that the rad sits on coming from the slam panel, i have a new slam at home, but ain't had time to put it on, is it hard?)

It could just be missing the rubber mount bit on the top of the radiator.

There are 2 rubber mounts on the top and there are to bolts in the panel that has the bonnet catch etc on it. These bolts should be inside these mounts which then holds the radiator in place.

Yep they can be bought, have to go to the dealer to get them. I had to get one as once had fell off and my radiator wasnt sitting correct or very secure.

thanks alot craig, does anyone know the code? i looked on vagcat, but couldn't find it
also it's a 16v ABF, does it vary along the lines?

:D

I dont know the code, I just went to my dealer and told them what I was looking for. They pulled up the pictures on EKTA and I pointed out to them.

Im sure it is the same for all of the models.

thanks to everyone, will check it hasn't broken off the radiator, then i'll need a whole radiator!

does the radiator top pipe have a screw type jubilee, or a pinch grip type one?

PS just 11/12 i need right?

Im sure that the radiator top hose is one on those pinch grip type ones.

The way to do those is get a big set of mole grips and squeeze the clip open (mole grips closed) and leave them like that.

Thats the way I did it with the similar/smaller clips when I was changing my coolant tank.

thats what i thought craig, its got a bloody jubilee screw-type on it! [:@]

i have pinch-grip ones on the other ends, just the engine end doesn't, might be the reason behind the pipe coming loose too!

yeah mate i know how the pinch-grip ones work, i just seem to have a jubilee clip on it, so thought that was OEM!

still didn't get time to check the radiator (uni's hectic atm argggghhhh lol)

might order from sere motors soon though, did a good price :D

jubilee is better than the other type, so id probably look further than checking just the clip... possibly a split hose... only time will tell eh

really? well i am ordering a new pipe anyway mate, jsut want it to be as secure as it can, gotta check the screw part for the top of rad tomorrow morning so i can order them!
thanks!

ok i had a look, and i don't have any of these screws for the rad on either side (i can see the where it goes onto the rad though) is there meant alot of space between the top of of the slam panel and top of rad? are these bolts big? i'm kinda confused, if anyone can get a pick of a normal setup please
thanks for everyones help!

there shuld be 2 grooves on the top of the rad where the rubber bits went... if you can measure the distance between the slam panel and rad, you can get an M6 bolt to suit and use that on its own... This is all i have on one side of my rad after i lost one of the rubbers...

The oem pinch type clips are actually better than jubilee clips, as they can expand and contract as parts heat up and cool down, yet always maintain correct clamping pressure. Well, when new that is ;)

still a right slag to get em off sometimes though, as above I use mole grips.

hey boys, i got the parts, and that rubber thing just sits on top of the radiator, i dunno where the bolt screws into? can anyone show me any pictures please, from an ABF ideally, but they are more or less the same right?
as there is alot of space between the top part of the slam panel, if it does screw in there!

thanks in advance!

On top of it there is like a plastic bit which has a 'vee' shaped middle with a groove along the bottom. The screw should go into that groove. Push and hold the radiator in place before you tighten the screw down so the radiator is sitting correctly in place.

yeah i put them rubber bits on top of the rad ok, it's only i dunno where the bolts screw in? do i need to remove the front grill? so i guess the V-groove is where the bolt will sit on top so it stops movement, but i can't see a point to screw this on?
thanks craig for all the help, feel like a complete n00b as my rad doesn't have any to look at lol
