Oil temp gauge sender problem

Went to install my autogauge oil temperature gauge today, however had a spot of trouble with the sender, as i was screwing it in I seem to have over done it and the temperature probe at the end of the threaded section has met with something and has partially sheared and left some of itself inside the filter housing, its only a very small piece but still im a little worried, obvisiously i took it off and have replaced it with the blanking off part.

Will the filter pick up this piece of metal?

Is it safe to drive now?

Has anyone had this problem with the sender seemingly not having to go its full depth of thread into the housing?

I'd appreciate some advise lads.

someone else did if i remember, if its still in it then it wont really go anywhere as it'll be tight not anything major just yet but obviously something to get sorted

my sender went all the way in no probs did you cross thread it, and use a washer as well??

Dont think i cross threaded but because of the location and lack of view, maybe i did, actually the end of the sender is pulled to one side so thats very possible actually.
So that just leaves me with needing to get that bit of metal out, I'll have to remove the housing will i? cant see anyother way.

as for a new sender, where can i get a replacement one without buying a new gauge??? oh man!

I had the same problem mate. Got one of the guys at work to make me up a brass washer / spacer about 6mm thick IIRC. Mine bottomed out if I just screwed it in without the spacer. Another thing I remember is (I got my Autometer oil temp gauge and sender from America) is the thread on the sender was 'tapered' and the oil filter housing thread wasn't. My mate at work had to spin the tapered thread down on a lathe before it would fit without feeling like it's going to jam in there and strip the thread. If I were you I would not run the car, dump the oil / change the filter, yeah I know it's hassle but imagine if you don't and something bad happens / oil pump gets it or an oil way gets blocked, you'd kick yourself for not changing the filter wouldn't you. Just my views

had an emergency and had to drive 40 miles with the car, everything seems fine, going to drain the oil and change the filter tonite, hopefully its in the filter or else the pickup in the sump has it

Dont think so stretch because as i was tightening it, it suddenly became loose, so there was a resistance and all of a sudden there wasn't, plus i screwed in the sender all the way, the thread on the housing is hardly as long as the sender is it?

What i'll do is test it out with some wire tonite before i change the oil and filter and check for any obstructions.

My autogauge sender didn't go right down to the top of the thread but fitted ok with no obstruction.
