OBD2 torque app boost leak

I have a seat leon 2.0 tdi ref sport, which i believe needs a new turbo due to siren noise and suspected bearing wear (see my other threads).

It has always suffered with low mpg no more than 38mpg however has recently developed a high pitch whistle when on boost, this has never been present before and may be a disturbed turbo hose or similar.

Having discovered the torque app, I have just purchased an obd2 bluetooth adapter and am looking to try it asap.

So far I have checked it for fault codes and there are none shown, however I was hoping there was some way of using it to determine if I do have any boost leaks or if there are any turbo issues etc.

I have previously heard mention of running logs to check actual boost pressure against requested pressure or similar.

Ill be honest and say that I dont really understand any of these bits but was hoping someone could help or give some advice on what things to add to the app to check (boost, maf, intake pressure etc etc) or things to look for to confirm that my car is actually performing as it should.

As far as im aware its standard engine standard map

I can't really help you mate, sorry. But I would like to know which OBD reader you went with and how well it works? I've seen loads on EBay and have been tempted myself, but am wary of buying cheap tat.

I bought this one, it is the same as above but cheaper, it is a uk seller and arrived in a few days. Also it is small so allows you to keep the dash panel in place with it installed/fitted.

Out of all the people raving about this product and saying it is in the top 10 apps ever made and you shouldnt own a car without it etc etc, there must be someone that knows how to actually use it for a purpose, otherwise what benefit does it actually have other than looking cool. There must be a way I can log and check my figures are correct atleast?

The app wont give you specified boost or anywhere near the range of information that a full diagnostic interface such as VCDS will.

Yes you can log data such as boost, MAF and various temperatures etc. but unless you know what readings to expect or what to look for - it won't be very much help. It certainly won't tell you that you have a boost leak or what the cause of your poor MPG is.

Can you tell me instructions how to actually log the data properly as I cant seem to figure it. Say for example torque and bhp on a graph together. Or boost whilst on a run to see of there are any sharp spikes or sudden drops

Also I was hoping someone would know what readings to expect for maximum boost psi etc, and what it should read ticking over. When I did a couple of tests yesterday trying to figure it out, it gave a max value of 22psi.

On tick over it sits at 0.2 and after a while I get a whistle noise (like the turbo) and it increases to 0.7. If I blip the throttle the noise goes and pressure drops back down again. After a minute or so whilst stationary it repeats

BHP and Torque are an utter waste of time.

There is a graphing option on the app where you select what you want and log the graph. ive never used it as VCDS is much better for this. No idea on expected boost off the top of my head, 22psi sounds about right though

Sounds normal, thats down to the EGR flow reducing after sitting at idle for 30 seconds or so, results in more flow through turbine and a little more boost. 0 or thereabouts at idle is correct

How did you manage to get your phone to show any data on the Torque app?

I have the exact Bluetooth adapter and I dont get any values, it used to work great on my previous car, but on the Leon there is nothing.

Do you just pair to the Bluetooth device and instantly you get dials working or is there any specific setup?

You need to set up a profile to match the specifics of your car ideally, including the protocol your car uses for diagnostic info.

I've set mine up so that as I open Torque, the app does the rest - opens the dashboard display, turns on and connects with Bluetooth and within a few seconds it displays live data at a moderate sample rate

I also leave my bluetooth device connected 24/7

Does that drain your battery?

Yeah, I was wondering the exact same thing! I thought the obd port was always powered?

Quick Google came up with the answer:

For those who want to learn from my stupidity, the short answer is yes.

Bluetooth continues to transmit and you can indeed connect to it when it is merely plugged in even without the keys in the ignition - you cannot communicate with the ECU without turning the key to the ACC position, but you most certainly can drain your battery by leaving the device connected overnight

Can do if your bluetooth device is always active, mine isn't. It doesn't transmit unless ignition is on. I've left it connected 24/7 for 6 months in this car, 2+ years in my old Golf, never even a hint that it's drawing current from the battery. Even left it connected while the car was parked up for 2 weeks without issue

I had a play about with the lite version of the app, may get the full version in the next few days. However, I have noticed that the throttle position dial goes from 11% foot off the pedal, to about 89% at wide open throttle.

A quick Google came up with the theory that it angle degrees not percent, or that it is normal and some cars just give these reading. All a bit inconclusive really. Just wondered if any of you guys have any clues on this?

Never looked at throttle position, i might have a look on mine later if i remember, will then compare it with VCDS too.

As long as i remember :)
