Seriously, and not wanting to p155 on anyone's parade here, but if it's going to be your car and you're going to be the main driver, bite the bullet and have it insured in your name. A policy in your mothers name with you as named driver if you are the main driver is the sort of thing insurance companies take a very dim view of, and they'll try anything to avoid paying a claim. No point scrimping on insurance if you end up with a policy that won't pay out. The premium may end up lower, but if the policy doesn't pay out should you need it, it's not very good value for money is it? You could try adding your parents as named drivers on a policy in your name, which may bring the premium down a bit.

i was talking to one of the staff at school about it and she said she did it for her son, but had her own insurance policy on her car and did the same with her sons car but was using her no claims bonus on both cars and thats what she got caught out on

my mum has no insurance policy of her own and she will be driving it sometimes when she needs it, the drive is an odd shape so when the other car is blocked off then it will be hers to use ! also it will be a better car than hers so she might have the urge to drive it

i was gettin stupid things like £4000 quotes when i was looking for first time insurance...

the £1500 mark is about average for a 17 year old, go on confused or elephant, summit like that...and try with and with out pass plus, it didnt make a difference for me so i didnt do it.

also if you say you have a drive it should be a bit cheaper, mines in the street outside my house

im over 6 foot mate, on my second 3dr now. and although ive never sat in the back a couple of 6 foot ish friends always tell me its roomy lol, well except when its full of crap. all this talk of "power" a 8v gti is only 115bhp (apparantly) its not going to set the world on fire and its not too much. i found i had a 1.1L saxo and then a 1.6L mk2 Golf.. then the ibiza 2L 8v. i couldnt stand not having any poke.

they are a lot faster than you think!!! mine made 130 bhp and 150 lb/ft of torque with a knackered MAF and a chavvy cone air filter! they most definately do have "poke!!"

its just somthing you have to bite the bullet with mate. when i was 17 i had a N reg ibiza 1.3i and the insurance was £1250 in my brothers name and he had 5 years no claims ! its stupid but sadly was justified when i crashed it into someone.....but sadly you just have to keep your head down, pay it and and come out the other side. Now i have 3 years no claims - 6 points and ive just insured my 16v for £440 !!!!! bargain ! ( bell.com )

You won't be earning any no-claims bonus though, your mother will.

If you can't afford it, then there's only one option. Don't buy it.

I don't want you hitting me and then having your policy declared void.

the insurance company im going with gives no claims bonus to named drivers

its all above board, we have checked it all out because my parents were very sceptical about it all

Have you asked this question:

"Is it ok for my parent to be the main driver and me as a named driver, even if in practice I am the main user?"

I'm suprised the insurance have told you it's 'above board'..... type 'insurance fronting' into google and see what comes up:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/7052569.stm
http://www.insurancedaily.co.uk/2007/11/01/illegal-fronting-in-car-insurance-a-growing-problem/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2004/apr/24/motorinsurance.insurance

And you'll probably find that the no-claims for named drivers can't be transferred to other insurance companies, but you could use it if you stay with the same company.

i would stay with the same insurance company anyway, they are good enough. its the only way i can afford the insurance, if the insurance companies didnt want it to happen so much then they would lower the price, its not surprising people go without insurance at all. its not as if my mum will never drive it, she will drive it depending on where abouts the car is on the drive. im not wanting anything that will go a million miles an hour and just drive like an idiot, i just want it to get to school and back and to work and back and she will probably drive it over the weekend as its cheaper petrol for her

I understand where you're coming from. Really, I do. It's not personal!

Have you read the links I put up? What do you think to them?

i have read the links, they make it sound like i and everyone else who does it will be locked up or have very bad things happen to them because of it, and all the points that they raise are very valid and true but the fact is that loads and loads of people do it and are not caught by it, and then there are those who drive around like idiots without insurance who end up crashing into others and leaving them stumped, the exact thing happened to my dad a month ago, they just drove off and didnt even consider stopping, its stupid.

i can sadly back up what Alpinewhite is saying, and i have heard of people people pulled over mid afternoon by the old bil to find that they are only a named driver and them having there policy voided.....i know the number who get caught is very low to the people who do it BUT I did it !!!!....&.....like what MP29 is saying ....at the time it was the only way i could get insured !! so i gambled and i didnt get caught and now.

i had a bengal yellow s reg seat ibiza sxe when I was your age, it was only a 1.4 but was suprisingly nippy and cost me £1000 with 59000 on the clock, i remember paying just over a grand on insurance just for a 1.4 so i think a gti is out of the question, they are the perfect car for new drivers and from my past experience amazing on fuel :D

To be blunt, insurance fronting is fraud.

The insurers would be well within their rights to refuse a claim, leaving you uninsured and looking down the barrel of 6 points, which would end up in your licence being revoked if it were to occur within 2 years of you passing your test.

The insurers would also be well within their rights to cancel the policy, which could make life difficult for either of you trying to obtain insurance in future.

I know insurance costs are high, but there's all sorts of reasons for this. I'm no big fan of insurance companies, but to be quite honest, the insurance companies aren't the only bad guys here - they're doing what any business that wants to remain a viable business would do, and that's passing on their costs to their customers. Personal injury claims have played a huge part in jacking up premiums. Cars cost more to repair than they used to - labour rates are higher than they used to be, because people are getting paid more and overheads are going up. And that impacts upon what is repairable and what isn't - once upon a time, panels would be hammered out, skimmed with filler and then painted, but all that time costs money tho, so nowadays they're more likely to just bolt on a new panel. Painted plastic bumpers are another example - a scrape in the paint would mean you'd need the whole thing repainting, which is likely to sting you several hours labour by time it's been prepared and painted. Whilst modern cars protect us better than older cars, they absorb much more of the impact and tend to incur a lot more damage as a result - which means more parts and yet more labour.

I've rambled off topic a little here, but seriously, do it right. Just because other people do it doesn't make it right. Or legal.

Oh, and talking to 'staff' at school for advice is really daft - I've yet to meet a teacher that I have any respect for - please don't take their advice on car insurance, I'm pretty sure it's not their field of expertise.

Insurance costs a bomb at 17-21 because you WILL be having a big accident.

And when you do, and you survive neither you or your mum will get good value insurance (if at all) for anything.

Simply put, if you can't afford it, don't - there's a reason I don't drive about in a 911.

this is all getting a wee bit off topic.

all i want is a little car to get me to school and back, nothing to go racing in or cruise around in with my friends, just a little car for little trips. its that or spend the next two years until im nearly 19 years old on a school bus with 13 year olds pelting god knows what down the bus and spending an hour each way to and from school for a 20 min journey in a car. technically my mum does not own a car, so i dont see how it would look so very bad, were doing it all through the same insurance our other car is with and nothing as come up as yet.

can we talk about ibizas now ?!
