Incase you want to disable the feature with VAG-COM or if someone else who finds this wants to, I've outlined the steps to do it below.

Turn on ignition, start up VAG-COM...

Go to "Select control module" from the main menu.
Select "46 - Central conv."
Click on "Adaption - 10"
Press "Up" next to channel number and watch for "Auto Lock" at the top.
When found Auto Lock, set "New Value" to '0' from '1' click "Test" then "Save"
Press "Up" next to channel number and watch for "Auto Unlock" at the top.
When found Auto Unlock, set "New Value" to '0' from '1' click "Test" then "Save"
Then click "Done, Go Back"

Remove key from ignition then the next time you start up those annoying locks won't bother you.

On the same screen you can also find the Lock/Unlock Chirps too, and adjust using the same manner.

Also to disable selective locking (One press unlocks all doors and boot, rather than one press for drivers door then another press for the rest) follow the instructions below...

Turn on ignition, start up VAG-COM...

Go to "Select control module" from the main menu.
Select "46 - Central conv."
Click on "Recode - 07"
The number in at present will be a even number, add one to that number to make it an odd number then click "Do It".
Remove keys from ignition and lock the car - the next time you go to unlock pressing the unlock button will unlock everything.

I've disabled both on mines - found them more hassle than handy.

Regarding the lack of acceleration went out last night and noticed that it seems to be smoking when it wasn’t before! Slightly worried now

You should think yourself lucky, I'd be happy with that!

I used to get a 1.0 Arosa as a courtesy car...
