Engine Rebuild !

Regrettably i have to inform the Leon Cupra has had a big end failure.

Driving my sister back from the garage (dropping her car off) i gave it a little juice. Just after i hit third gear i loose power and boost and the car makes a loud tapping noise. i coast it home as i was fairly local. i managed to get it towed to my mechanics garage and left it with them in a sorry state.

Initially my friends and i thought it was just the hydrolic lifters, so i had them replaced (with water pump and cambelt). put it all back together... checked the big end to find no real sign of damage. but still the noise was present. Stripped it down once again to see a bent con rod.

Sooo ENGINE REBUILD !!!! ££$£££$£££

we have ordered the integrated engineering con rods from Badger 5.
big end bearings , head bolts and seals.

Just waiting to hear from my mechanic whether ill need to replace either the pistons or piston ring (i had excessive oil consumption)

I am blaming this all on the dodgey remap on the car that was on it from purchase. The company is not well known and as far as i can tell, not specialist in Vag tuning.

so after the rebuild ill need to get the car, re - re mapped by someone who knows what they're doing.

So I've just booked the car in for next week @ badger5 to get the cars mapping sorted. Hopefully with the integrated engineering connecting rods and a decent map I should have trouble free stage 1 fun. I'm also getting the badger5 TIP (billet one) fitted while there.

I'll be posting pictures of the events as they happen when I get my car back. I asked the garage to keep the old con rods for me as a momento . I might frame them !

I will be posting pictures of it for all to see.

I won't get to see mine before they go in as I've had them sent to the garage would have been nice to have seen them before hand ! Take pictures etc .

Why did you fit yours ? Failure , or after more power ?

Jayfr150 LCR 225 ENGINE REBUILD !!

Just collected the car this afternoon. Really happy to get it back.

Before I collected the car the garage told me I had a flat battery as the aux water pump had been running all night. This was down to a faulty temp switch, the car had been registering the temperature at 15 degree over actual, which could have been a contributing factor in the con rod failure especially at high rpm and max load. So as a last job the garage replaced my temp switch and all is running smooth. It was a good job I was sitting down when I received the invoice. Here's a list of the parts replaced.

.integrated engineering rods and ARP 2000 bolt
.piston rings
.hydraulic tappet set
.bigend bearings
.headbolts and head set
.rocker cover gasket set
.Antifreeze
.oil and filter
.water pump and cambelt
.temp switch sensor

Just need to run in the engine and change the oil in time to go up to badger5 next Wednesday for a mapping session.

More issues !

Yes, i feel like this car has plundered my bank account.

As an extra issue, (as if i needed any more) the cars aux water pump seems to be running non stop and it has drained the battery. Tried to charge the battery but it is knackered. im buying a new bosch batt but i am still unsure if this will resolve the aux water pump. I have already replaced the etc sensor..

what else ... just purchased a shiney new tax disc.

I'm also shopping around for 4 new tyres, looking at my personal favourite Toyo T1R's

Next week ive got mapping at Badger5 so theres a lot going on the cupra at the moment...

Jayfr150 LCR 225 toy... Engine Rebuild

Not much to report until I have my mapping session at badger5. Running in the Engine quite a tedious process. Driving for miles and miles off boost on variant rpm is fairly dull but it is running in nicely, I'm about half way there so a few hundred miles and the new rings should be set.

Since I have to drive the car a lot right now, I took a trip to Crawley down and picked up a new splitter (original one looked like Mike Tyson's nose) .

Boom...

I fitted for more power. When the head was off it turned out I had a broken piston ring so its a good job really..

Great looking car mate, and nice little touches! Have a sneaky peak at my thread if you like ;) keep up the good work.

Thanks, its concerning how much focus i have on the car now. spending is coming too easy...

Lovely car this, congrats to yourself !

:D

The LCR looks lovely Jay!!

Where did the Ibiza end up? I'd love to buy it back as a track car :)

I did sell it after i had all the body work done and got above market price for it, i think due to the set up and immaculate paint / body work it was very easy to sell. especially as there aren't many of them around

I fitted for more power. When the head was off it turned out I had a broken piston ring so its a good job really..

i see, its all fun and games ! i feel a lot more at ease knowing my engine has been rebuilt with uprated parts so although expensive i have peace of mind, which was something i did not have before.

In preparation for my trip to badger 5 I've had to raise the car , which does not look great but is only temporary..

Picture of my prosport coilovers. All Thanks to copper grease or they would have seized in the winter salts..

Gave the brembos a quick clean as well as the arches.

Raised the car up to standard height..

Also shopping for some toyo proxes at the mo and trying to get the best price

A great looking LCR! I agree it's the small touches that makes the car, so hopefully in time you'll find some ideas and inspiration. These cars take great photos too so I'm sure that'll keep you motivated. At least you know the engine is healthy now and will have a safe map on it. Good call on getting Bill's TIP. I was very happy with mine :)

Yesterday was a bit of an adventure. I made the drive from gatwick to stroud (136 mile) to visit badger5 to get a simple stage 1 map to replace the lousy, spiky unknown map on the car from when I bought it.

I left at 5:30am and got there by 8. Boring Motorway driving !
I needed to change the oil before Bill could work on it so this was done before they arrived..
Boom.

80mm tip with billet adapter..

The adapter wouldn't fit my turbo at first. Seems as though mine is slightly bigger than standard. The guys had to use the lathe to take it back.

Smoke test went badly as well. I had leaks in the PCV system , boost vac pipe and oil dipstick.

Finally on the rollers , but only briefly. We suffered some misfires. New plugs and coil packs and we were able to finally attempt mapping.

Cheeky rolling pic

After around 4 attempts changing various parameters we had a map that suited the car.

Bill explained my turbo is only at about 75% output to produce this power.

The map compared to the old one is feels brilliant. Really smooth power and Bills gear based boost is a great feature . I've not been able to test it out yet but it's a great feature to his mapping and a needed option if you want to have usable power especially in low gears .
