Is my car fitted with an alarm? How can I test?

Hey...

I'm trying to figure out if my Leon is fitted with an alarm.

My first thoughts were it wasn't, namely because when I lock the car with the remote, and then open the door with the mechanical key, no alarm is sounded. (From what I gathered from the manual, I have 15 or so seconds to put key in ignition, or else alarm will sound).

But here's what I don't get.. From the manual:

Safe activated with or without alarm Indicator continually flashing
Safe deactivated without alarm Indicator flashes for about 7 times and turns off
Safe deactivated with alarm Indicator flashes for about 7 seconds, turns off and the continues to flash after about 28 seconds.

So I thought I would deactivate Safe to see if my car has an alarm fitted. If light continues to flash after 28 seconds, it should have an alarm.

Weird part, I don't get the "7 seconds flashing" at first. But then, after about 28 seconds, the light flashes and continues to flash.

Might anyone have any insight on this? And is it possible that the car is fitted with an alarm, but it is deactivated? (as I was browsing the forum, I might'v read that it could be, and has to be activated by VAG-Com).

Your help is appreciated

Haha thanks for the replies guys. I did initially try locking the car with windows open, then opening door from inside. Nothing went off. I assumed the alarm was deactivated because I had to deactivate Safe to be able to open the door from the inside.

As for the movement inside the car, well as I said earlier, I read here that the volumetric sensors are sometimes disabled, and have to be enabled via VAG-Com. If I understood correctly, these are what triggers the alarm in such cases? (Needless to say, I tried that and no alarm sounded).

Could that be the reason the alarm is not sounding? Or is it certain that the car isn't fitted with an alarm at all?

Thanks again, and a happy new year to you all.

Does it have a red flashing led on the passenger door trim?

I thought all mk2 Leon's had the led on the passenger/left front door?
Seems odd

Okay I think they all do have them on the front left door. Only, the front left door isn't always the passenger door. :p

We drive on the the right.

But yeah, I have the red flashing light. I don't think though that's any indication to the presence of an alarm system.

Actually I'm pretty sure it is the indicator for the alarm. As far as I understand, if you can enable/disable SAFE (clicking the lock button twice in less than 2 sec or in pre FL models with the button on the door) you should have an alarm.

I didn´t know you need to activate the volumetric sensors through VCDS, mine were active since I bought the car from the dealer.

Why don't you try folding the backseats and locking the car while you are in there (dont disable SAFE), inside the boot, at the middle of it, you should see a slot. The manual says that if you slide your key into that slot, the boot mechanism should open (to prevent you getting locked inside). I think that if the boot lid opens the alarm should sound.

Well, I initially assumed the LED is the indicator for the alarm. But the manual states that the indicator will flash on all vehicles, regardless of whether they are fitted with an alarm or not.

At any rate, I tried locking the car, and opened the boot from the internal slot. No alarm.

If in fact no alarm is fitted in the car, is it at all possible to activate the feature via VCDS so the horn sounds?

(I've also come across threads here with people saying their alarm sounds their horn and not an alarm siren).

And is there any way to see if I actually have the volumetric sensors or not? (Can I physically spot them?)

Thanks again!

That could be very funny if there isn't a slot!

Amm...I didn't know there were Leon models without an alarm! Let me connect my VCDS to see if there is a feature in the 09 Central Electric module. Also, if you connect the cable, you should see an alar Module..

Anyway, the volumetric sensors are installed on the little plastic grill on the top console where the sonroof controls are:

This is a Ibiza but you get the idea:

and this is the leon's sensor:

hope it helps!

Well, I didn't assume Leons came without alarm either. Hence my confusion.

I checked and I do have the plastic grill on the top console. But could that just be an empty plastic housing? (with no actual sensors inside?)

And thanks for checking for VCDS. I haven't actually bought that yet. Was kinda checking if it's worth the $250 investment at this time (how exactly it would benefit me/what I'd be able to do with it if bought) to decide if I buy or not.
