Mate I am sorry to hear your troubles and hoping your replacement engine serves you well.
Just a tip with the black one and 5 th gear. I had a 1.4 Polo from new and after 3 years found it harder and harder to down change into 2nd gear, it started crunching bad and I was told the synchromesh may have gone and would need a rebuild.
Whilst saving up the £500 I took it for a service at a local cheap place (non franchise) and when I picked it up they mentioned they had adjusted the selector cables as they noticed the gearbox was stiff. It transformed the car, totally fixed :).

It’s a long shot but has yours been checked for gear selector adjustment.

hey, thanks for that, my dad told me to call this guy who does nothing but overhauls gearboxes and when i told him my problem he said, simple enough to sort out, its either a nut has come loose or it needs a new gear selector.

so my next question is... how much is a gear selector!
im sure i will love these cars once they are sorted. Black one passed MOT today so its not all bad!
but my list now consits of
5th Gear problem (black)
Window Regulator (blue)
Folding Passenger Seat (blue)

and ill be pretty much sorted then!

im driving along and the put the car in 1st gear, put my foot down and it wont go faster than 10 miles an hour, 2nd gear no faster than 20 and so on until 5th gear it will rise to 60mph

Sounds like an Ignition coil on its way out for that, very cheap fix though- Does the engine management light flash at you whilst it happens?

Mate try starting a new thread with this question, you will get better/more responses.

Also I`m no gearbox expert but timing? your tutor said that? Sounds like syncro or perhaps the linkage needs adjusting. Check/replace the gearbox oil?
