is buying a seat ibiza the worst thing i could have done?

Hi Guys,
im in desperate need of some advice, and this might be a long post, but here goes!

last may i bought a used Black Seat Ibiza 1.2, 5 Door, Petrol, 67K miles on the clock.
loved it since i set eyes on it and took it for a test drive and drove like a dream. any way got it home and about 2 days after i got it the engine management light came on and wouldnt go off, i called the guy i bought it from and he assured me that it was the camshaft position sensor and he just hadnt got time to change it. fair enough, got the sensor changed and the light went off, so all is well until around june this year, im driving along and the put the car in 1st gear, put my foot down and it wont go faster than 10 miles an hour, 2nd gear no faster than 20 and so on until 5th gear it will rise to 60mph and then pull back and slow down and the way to cure it is to turn the engine off and restart, but this got gradually worse and i would sometimes have to turn the engine off 20 - 30 times to get it to run properly, and to make matters worse the car will no longer stay in 5th gear, if i drive normally , work my way through the gears and get to 5th it will suddenly just "jump out" and ill be left with a scraping noise until i put it into 1-4 gears but it wont stay in 5th.
So what i want to know is, can the gearbox be accessed while the car is up on the ramp?
can i get to repairing the 5th gear without actually taking the gearbox out? and has anyone else had the same problem?

now im not finished,
Pleased with my purchase last year my wife went out the next month and bought another seat ibiza 1.2 3 door with 47k miles on the clock and this was a little speedester!
lovely to drive ( and i never know why these things dont happen on the test drives)
but anyway after a few days we were driving it and the red oil light in the centre of the instrument panel lit up and made a beeping noise, so i thought it needed oil and put some in it, but no. the light and the noise continued. so i got the oil sensor changed, no joy, i left it into the dealers who cleaned some gauze and stuff from the sump, nope still beeping and im at my wits end as to what to do with it.
the problems with this one were slightly more.
Cup holder didnt work (fixed now)
Oil light - at my wits end as to what to do
Passenger seat - broke and wont go forward.
drivers window - needs a new regulator.

although last year i was able to go out and buy 2 new cars, my bank balance is a little lighter this year hence why i have had to put up with these problems until i can afford to get them fixed.

but basically with my 5 door i need the gear box fixed and with my 3 door i need the oil light fixed.

Help please! and sorry for such a long post!

Oh and if anyone knows of a workshop manual for this car could you please point me in the right direction as i cant find one anywhere!

THanks

just thought id update you guys,

My Blue seat ibiza finally packed in, the engine was making a loud racket and i left it into a garage who stripped it down and found the engine is completley wrecked!
starved of oil the bearings were gone, as was the oil pump and now needs a new engine!

is a bit gutting really as the previous owner sold it knowing these problems existed and never once commented!

so i have been quoted £350 for a 2nd hand engine with 37,000 miles on the clock, would this be about right? also been quoted £400 for fitting it.

cheers

Out of interest, what age and miles is your car - and what engine does it have? The price of engines that are still being used will always be a bit higher than you'd like - but £400 to replace it - that seems a bit steep. Maybe that also covers all work done to date - ie investigating the original problem - but that would only have needed a couple of hours to get down to the point of finding that fixing was not worth while doing.

mate i am really sorry to hear that! i know exactly how you feel, it has happened on my mk2 ibiza, the previous owner was a complete w+anchor :w4nk: lol

but i have made mine better, has had a few bob spent and time, but it makes you appreciate it more!

here's 2 links off ebay for an engine, i'd email them asking (i think your engine code is AZQ for a 1.2 12v)
Link 1
Link 2

also there is a place in coventry called CVP Services who specialise in VAG cars, give them a ring for prices too

hope you get it sorted mate :)

Dombo, I'm so sorry for you mate.
You look like you've had to the worst run in with Ibizas ever, People like me are pissed because our headlights steam up and wing mirror whistling.

Thats terrible.
Personally I'd see how much you can break the car for and if possible purchase yourself a 1.9TDI, Their incredibly economical and PD100/130 engines are total workhorses as I'm sure most people will agree.

I dont think buying Seat Ibizas are the worst thing you've ever done, I think you've just bought a car from a dishonest person.
I feel £400 might be a little steep for a 1.2 3pot engine. I'd expect £400 for a 1.8T engine.

Well..
Thanks for the advice guys, i do really love the cars when they are running well. but i hope to love it even more when its fixed

To suj, thanks for the links to ebay, but one is the wrong engine code, but ill have a look into the other one

i was looking at an engine on ebay from coventry, could have been the same one.

To RUM4MO
my car is 2004 and had 67k miles on the clock, what really frustrates me was i brought it to seat and they told me it was just dirt in the gauze between the oil and the oil pump.
maybe if they had changed the oil pump then i could have avoided this!

never mind... will see how i get on now when i get a new engine!

PS> never got my black one sorted, still driving round using 4 gears, thats next on my list as i need a car for work so once the blue one is sorted ill use that for work and get the black one fixed.
i have been quoted £100 - £150 to fix the gearbox, does anyone know if you access 5th gear on the ibizas without taking the gearbox out? im lead to believe 5th gear is seperated from the other 4!

And now it sounds like you can almost buy a Haynes repair manual - see other posting. Cars, don't you just love them, buying cars secondhand - now that is a challenge if you want a good one as you end up falling in love with them!

Dude glad to hear one is sorted, but i feel sorry for you with all the work an all! Ibiza generally arent bad cars but i think those two have just had bad prev owners and no luck! But every second hand car will have small issues as you never know what its been through. My turbo has just had it with mine and seat quoted 1300 for a new one :O Im a student so im kinda fudged atm too :/ Oh well best of luck with yours and keep us posted on whats going on! :)
