Finally got some filters for the bike carbs the other day

Recently I managed to lose 1st gear in the GT gearbox. I kinda expected it to fail since I got it for £30 and basically dug it out of someone's garden! I flushed it through a couple times but it was leaking pretty bad and I was abusing it comprehensively :D.
Yesterday I put my standard 8p box back in, it was always a safer bet since its low milage and a known quantity. In an ideal world I'd have the shorter ratios of the GT box with the 5th gear from the 8p, but we'll see how it goes with the original one back in for now. It didnt cost me anything which was the main concern but I am on the lookout for a good GT box or maybe one of the 5speeds out of a 1litre.

Where did you go for the hillclimb ? I might tag along if you do another.

Prescott hill climb, it's near Cheltenham (home of the Bugatti owners club dontcha know). I go every year for Retro Rides Gathering, £40 for an afternoon/morning of runs (about 6 or 7) is pretty good value. Not sure the LCR is very "retro" though

Actually on second thoughts - it might be retro by the time you've finished your run :rofl:

Not really updated this for a while so here goes!

Firstly, the car's running brilliantly. Really pleased with it and just been sorting out the little jobs.

Oil pressure sender was fubared. Oil pissing out of the top around the connector pin jobbie. I superglued it over Easter weekend until ECP was open on Tuesday and I popped down there and picked up a new one.

I also noticed the washers that were under it were mismatched and a bit old and probably create a few gaps.

I tried it without washers but I need a minimum of two thick ones for it to tighten properly. After fitting the new ones it was still leaking a tad so I wrapped a little PTFE around it and now it's bang on. Doesn't leak at all. So after a little research it turns out the washers there should be copper. If I'd had the proper copper ones then I wouldn't have needed any PTFE.

The only thing that's wrong with the car now is I've been having a bit of trouble with my offside engine mount. It's still the original part, and since I've replaced literally everything else on this car, I've forked out for a new one - well I say new, but it's discontinued everywhere so I've got a nice 2nd hand one for cheap. It just got here the other day, no pics yet.

I bought new poly mounts ages ago for when I did the conversion, but when it came down to it we didn't have time to do them so they're still sitting here untouched.

So why buy a new mount when you have a poly mount set at home?

I've not really spent any time on them since I bought the car, I was always planning on getting new ones, but the more I look at them, the more I like the original ones.

So I dug out some product and gave them a good going over.

Then I took the car down to AmD Essex for the SCN rolling road day. Needless to say I think I surprised a few Cupras ;)

Ended up running 131bhp but I can't remember the torque. I've got the graph somewhere and can scan it in later. It was a nice linear shape with no bumps so that's what matters really. The car is running great now, no more smoke - I've put that down to the fact that I was running no filters on the carbs (got some now - which might explain why I've lost 3bhp) but she pulls like a train and isn't smoking so I don't even think I'm going to bother with a compression test. I can assure you 130 odd bhp is plenty in something that weighs 750kg!

And then the other day something happened when I was browsing ebay. Wheels.

The Compos really are sooo right for it, but I've had them on for a few years now and fancy a change. Thanks to a poorly written listing I was the only bidder!

They're off a Lotus Esprit S1. They're 4x100 with a 57.1 CB so will bolt right on. Only trouble is the rears are VERY negative offset! I'm chatting to a good mate of mine at the moment about narrowing the rear beam.

do you not miss having real power?

I do miss the LCR. Doing the Euro SEAT meet in that car was awesome, we had it up to 160 on the autobahn and passing Scoobies on a wet Nurburgring was epic fun.

BUT the LCR was a great every day car, this is a great weekend car. The Leon would be doing 3 figures by the time I was in 3rd, and that was not only dangerous but to be honest it was pretty boring. There was no drama at all.

i can imagine 130 bhp in a little polo is quite scary my mate had a polo many years ago and 75mph was well scary i think that was only about 60bhp if it was lucky.

Yeah it still scares me and I'm used to it! Having said that it's pretty stable, just makes you feel a bit vulnerable. Being connected to the car is what I love about it, not having any power steering, stability control, ABS - or even a brake servo really lets you know and control what the car is doing.

Not only that, but passing a modern "fast" car in their Nan's shopping mobile is great fun! :happy:
