EmDee's Mk2 Polo Coupe

Car wouldn't start this morning, I've been in Birmingham for the past 5 days and left her at home so she clearly felt neglected and threw a strop.

Anyway, it was a dead battery. It looked like the battery in there was the original one, but I seriously doubt it after 21 years, the previous owner (Audrey) must have picked one up from the dealership. Anyway I managed to bump start her on my own (legend I know) and headed down to Halfrauds (trade card FTMFW).

So I was a bit skeptical about this because the battery tray on these is a known rust hotspot and after owning it for a year I'd still never made time to look under the battery. Even if the rest of the car is solid there is a bloody good chance it's rotten under the battery.

Well happy when i saw this! Not even any surface rot! Big relief.

Here's my new Bosch badboy:

Still no rocker cover but I thought I'd post this because it was expensive (£65) and I'm chuffed about my battery tray.

Thats amasing, i remember doing work on these when they were ten years old and there was literally a hole under the battery. Best way to fix as i remember was fibre glass sheeting.

Thanks to a local mate of mine I have come into posession of a rather nice rocker cover. It was a bit shoddy to begin with but patience and paint seems to have sorted that.

The phone pictures aren't great but you get the idea. I will get some of it in situ once it's fitted but I'm going to polish it a bit more before it goes on.

Chuffed, thanks to Darren (DK) who helped me polish it, he is the polishing king and my feeble efforts were truly shown up by his patience and bottomless polishing resources!

Actually I'm not sure if anyone on here can help but I'm after a part number for a rocker bolt that has some sort of built in breather facility - not sure if anyone knows what I'm on about? Worth a try :)

More to come soon with the long awaited replacement of the ghetto air feed! I've got some nice bits sitting here waiting to go on.

I thought I'd mention in here that I have procured a very large, practical daily diesel rig in order to keep the miles off this baby.

This is good for many reasons, it means this no longer has to be too practical and also that I can take better care of it. So the stereo will come out, standard tape player going back in and the paint and engine bay can get more attention. The insurance on this is now only valid for 1500 miles a year so it will be primarily a garage car which is a bit of a shame but I think it's the right thing to do. The bad news is that my practical daily diesel is going to be taking up most of my time!

hmm nearly 15 months without an update...

where do I begin?

Well about a year ago i went to RetroRides gathering and got some great pics of the old buzzard:

The convoy:

Which was nice.

So a few months later I finally got all the bits I needed together for the brakes.

stuff.jpg

Now with all the fluid (hopefully enough lol) and the calipers, all I needed were the hoses and pads.

yay

And if you look closely, those are not normal pads

mmm Raicams, hopefully they live up to the hype.

So, out comes the car and up she goes.

as as if by magic, on they went

Wasn't that simple actually, using the old carriers meant I had to buy a few longer bolts and sleeves, but hey it's never that easy is it?

So the next bits on my list were an oil breather and some poly engine mounts.

and some new clocks WITH A REV COUNTER!

oh the luxury!

The Main reason for these bits was because I had picked up something a bit more revvy.

A 1.4 16v AFH on R1 bike carbs

So those of you who know me will be aware that this has been a long time coming. It's been sat on the floor of my garage for months and now that I had finally saved up for the brakes and picked up the miscellaneous bits for it like the shorter ratio GT gearbox, lightened flywheel, all of the (bloody expensive) fluids including flushing oil for engine and box, ht leads, plugs, flywheel bots, clutch bolts etc etc it was finally time to drop it in.

Load up the daily and off we go.

As an added bonus the new setup came with an exhaust that provided much comedy value

IMAG0403.jpg

Although it started to grow on me after a day or so I couldn't quite bring myself to persevere with that, so I swapped it for something similar to my old exhaust in a smaller bore size.

Here are some shots comparing my old (1.75in) zorst wit the new (2in) one

IMAG0389.jpg

IMAG0387.jpg

The new one (the shiny one on the right lol) has a larger bore but a smaller tip, so it's a bit more discreet. Forgot to mention, the interim one that came with the lump was 2.25in so was a bit big. The replacement is perfect size and sounds great.

So yeah, all done really, had the carbs set up properly on a rolling road.

Dyno graph is here

A bit down on torque but still pretty chuffed. :D At only 700 odd kilos she's pretty rapid! :drive1:

So there's my build thread update done for the next few years haha

I'll leave you with a different pic of a Polo Parade
