Hi guys, i posted this is the mk1 leon sub forum but got no response. I've been having some trouble with excessive flow on my EGR valve. the backstory is the guy who i bought the car from (mk1 leon, 1.6 BCB engine) got an EGR valve from a scrap yard and put that on however the same fault code (16786)came back. he included the the old EGR valve in the sale and because this one is literally spotless and the one he bought was dirty i soaked the old on in EGR cleaner overnight, gave it a clean and put it back on.
This didn't sort the issue however the car is running much better with this one on! After reading a tread on the forum i thought it could be a faulty MAF sensor causing the error however my engine has a MAP sensor instead so i replaced that! The engine light stayed off for between 40 and 50 miles before coming back on!
what is my next plan of action? the mechanic i goes to wants to buy a brand new EGR valve from the dealer and see if that fixes it however that costs £200 without labour on top of it! i managed to changed the EGR valve myself when putting the original one back in so is it worth buying one online for £60 and seeing if that fixes it? i don't think the valve is faulty but i would rather gamble with £50-60 then £200+ being a poor student and all!
Ive read that other people with this problem have had it fixed by going to the dealers and having them factory reset the computer. Is this something i should consider doing?
Another option would be to just block the EGR valve at both ends, however the whole point of this is to get rid of the engine light as its running fine (apart from an unrelated misfire in cylinder 2)
is 2002 old enough that blocking the EGR valve off completely and getting rid of the code going to stop the engine management light off?
Any help greatly appreciated
