Hi all,

I'm after some new tyres.

My current ones are 91Y, but having searched around a bit, I've seen some stuff online (and on here) about people having 94Y on theirs, and some say that 91Y's only came with new leons because SEAT chucked on the cheapest thing available to them?

Can someone tell me whether I should be getting 91 or 94 please?:(

Thanks!

Sorry should have worded that a bit better.

The 94 rating will allow for an extra load to be supported safely. So it's just a bit of a "stronger" tyre. It will not degrade the ride at all.

To be honest if you have the option of one or the other just go as you please, both will be safe on your car

You need to check the correct load rating for your specific car. If the requirement is for 91Y then that or anything greater than that will be fine. If Seat's recommended load rating is 94Y , fitting anything lower will invalidate your insurance amongst other things.

What kazand said is spot on, i was assuming your car came with 91 from the factory.

Kazand is spot on.

The number is the load rating & the letter is the speed rating.

91 is 615kg
94 is 670kg.

In other words;
2 tyres with a 91 load will support 1230kg across an axle
2 tyres with a 94 load will support 1340kg across an axle

Y is 186mph max speed at maximum load

If your car requires a minimum of 91, then fitting 94 is perfectly fine.

Thanks Guari. If it won't degrade the ride or be noisier then I'll go for the higher rated.

Thanks Kazand. There's no load rating specific to my car, I've searched everywhere and can't find anywhere it gives a minimum specific load rating for tyres. I'll detail below what I HAVE found though.

I'm not sure what was on it out of the factory as I got it second hand, but I got it with 91W's on.

Thanks Andy! What you've said makes sense and kind of corroborates what I've seen online...

My manual says the "Gross Front Axle Weight (KG)" is 1075(KG).

Taking this, if I divide it in two, it'll give the max weight on one tyre (537.5kg).
If this is the case, an "89" load rated tyre would be sufficient (load rated for 580kg).

I have read though, that you should add 25% on to give some room for carrying extra load etc... so that'd take it up to 671kg, or a 95 (just)...

Given what the manual says, and then the '+25%' idea, IN THEORY, 91 OR 94 should be ample.

What do you think?

Is that gross unladen weight.....ie the weight of the car without people or luggage?

If so then deffo add 25% onto that.

To be honest, in my head if you go for a 94 load rated tyre, it won't do any harm at all & I assume they'll be the same price as a 91 load rated.....

What's the load & speed rating on the 2 tyres your not changing??

Just thinking logically, if you had 94 load rated tyres on all 4 corners, then that will support a max weight of 2680kg...

Thanks Andy,

The Gross weight of the vehicle is 1915kg.
Gross front is 1075.
Gross rear is 895.
Weight in working order (with driver) 1420.

That's all the detail it gives in the book.

I'm looking at getting them from fleabay then getting them fitted local.
the 91Y are £127 for 2, and the 94Y are £140 for 2. (Negligible difference tbh...)

The ones that are staying on are the rear P-Zero's. They're a 91W rating and have been on since I got the car. They don't really wear at all...

So with 91 load rated tyres all round that'd support a gross weight of 2640kg...more than enough

I was under the impression that modern car chassis spread any load over both axles.

If it was me (and I know there is debate over this).....id swap the rear wheels with pirelli p zeros to the front & get new on the rear.

Your rears may not wear out as quick as the fronts, but rubber does perish over time & if those p zeros are 5 years old + then you have to ask how much longer those tyres are going to last anyway.

You can get michelin pilot sport 3's brand new off black circles for less than £90 a corner. Rather buy 2 new, get those on the rear & put the pirelli on the front.....then when those wear out rotate again when you come to need 2 more.

Thanks again mate. You think I should be fine with either then?

You do have a point about putting the zeros on the front. I've had them on for 3 years thus far... I hate them too, so maybe it is an idea to swap them out and let them get some wear...

I'm going to get some UniRoyal RainSport 3's I think, after looking round and round at tyres all weekend lol

Yeah, you'll be fine with either 91 or 94......I only said 91 per my previous post as the p zero's were 91 & then you'll have the same rated tyres all round.

Just check the date of manufacture on the p zero's......you may of had them on the car for 3 years, but they may have been made 5 years ago....just something to consider

I have mine rotated when I change tyres, always have the new on the rear, just my choice
