Sounds like the cam chain tensioner, a lot of the leons do this including mine, they usually stop after a couple of seconds, the tensioners are hydraulic and need to fill with oil its while this is happening that the tapping noise can be heard, its when the noise doesn't stop is when you need to worry. Reving it also helps.

What could happen if the you leave the tensioner? Iv jus had a full cambelt service including pullys etc anxd water pump. Would mine have been changed then or is it a diferent area?

The car has done 88k miles, it had the cambelt serviced/changed at 76k miles so I wouldnt have thought that was bad, but like I said it goes away after a short time, I will try revving the engine next time it does it to see if it goes away, and yes ive checked the oil just had a service 1k miles ago...

It can throw the timing out, this has happenbed to me and i have a nice new tensioner on my desk waiting for me to fit it. Mine keeps tapping away i need to drive down the road and stop the engine and start it again before it stops tapping, there is a little filter under the tensioner i am assuming this gets blocked and until the pressure builds up enough it stops the oil going into the tensioner.

But this happens wether hot or cold he said in the title it's cold start but if you get it all the time the cam chain tensioner is a good bet but also carbon canester makes a tapping does it come from hear? If so then it cam chain thesioner ;)

It has a seal that holds oil pressure and if this breaks then the ngine has to build the pressure back up wen you first start the car once presure is achieved then it stops ;) if it completely fooked then it can't active pressure ;)

Carbon canister makes a ticking noise the tensioner makes the car sound like a diesel, also i think the cold weather could possibly make the oil thicker, so the tapping noise is more noticeable.

That could be the cam belt tensioner, not good if that goes, mega damage will follow.
