oh and my starter motor makes a right stupid noise and takes a few times to start somtimes AND my epc light came on today but it drives like it normal,

Yes all these petrol engined cars seem to have a horrible sounding starter motor - sounds cheap and knackered. I'd say it takes a very very wise person to buy a decent car at a decent price - and there are not many people around that can honestly say they fit into that description. We tend to buy with our hearts and eyes and leave the brain to sort it out later - maybe that is exactly what you should do - turn it back into what it should be and learn a lot about crappy modern VAG junk at the same time! I'd like to think that VAG has/will look long and hard at the damage that Fabia+Polo 9N +Ibiza 6L has done to their reputation for buying honest, touch, reliable and reasonably cheap to run small cars - then get their act together before Porche tells them to get out of this sector of the market.

Err sorry but you lost me here  Are you saying that Porsche will produce a small hatch to compete in the small hatch £7-£13k market

Didnt the Ibiza win Whatcars Car of the Year 3 times in a row?

From Wikipedia : This is regarded by some magazines to be the best supermini, with What Car? magazine calling it their best supermini for three years in a row.

Every Seat is pretty much Audi and VW parts anyway, and they dont make junk!

Polo's are great wee cars too

Wikipedia again: At the time of its launch, it was arguably the best small car on sale in Britain in terms of build quality and "upmarket" feel, something that was noticeably absent from the likes of the Citroen Saxo and Peugeot 106.

* 1999 Used Car Buyer "Greatest Used Car Buy Awards" – Best Economy Car
* 1998 Top Gear Magazine "Top Cars" – Best Supermini
* 1997 Auto Express "New Car Honours" – Best Supermini
* 1997 "Complete Car of the Year Awards" – Best Supermini
* 1995 Which? Magazine "Best Buys" – Best Supermini

I did rush into buying mine cuz i wanted one so much but i love it :D mechanically i think the build quality is pretty good. I've had mine a year and mines done over 70k. I haven't had one problem yet. sure theres a few niggles like the wear washer not working etc but most cars have small niggles

I think you've just bought one which hasn't been looked after, wouldn't surprise me if it was clocked

I think that you need to get the facts right and not just charge in with magazine/expert groups claims! What I was saying is that Skoda had responsability for this VAG generic model and I'd reckon that that is the very reason that all variants are having more than their fair share of expensive problems! Hint, none of the quoted experts look on the cost of ownership over the first 4 or 5 years and that is where these cars fall down! I know as I have owned a Polo 9n 2003MY from new and paid a lot of money in repairs, and yes a lot of Skoda and Seat owners of these small cars are also having to pay a lot of money to keep them going. No car is going to be cost free over the first 4 - 5 years of ownership, but this one seems to have hit an all time low considering that it comes from VAG.

No, I was just refering to the fact that Porche effectively control VW or what is better known as VAG.

Oh i see. Mind you i am surprised that Porsche would have such a level of control over the VAG group being a smaller concern. But you may be right.

I owned a VW Polo from new in 1996 until i replaced it with the Ibiza in March 2008. Overall i found the car reliable, it always started, never let me down and i never had to call the AA. There were smaller niggle repairs over the time such as both window motors failing, two horns replaced and the rear wash wipe giving up at 10 years. But other than that it was just service items Ie; two exhausts, one battery, cambelt, and discs pads etc.

The main dealer servicing cost were high compared to a mates Fiesta but once i used independents it came down. In the end i did'nt think it was too bad. However i had run it in properly and changed the oil on time etc. I also hardly thrashed it as it was only a 1.4 8v and really there was little point. Overall i would say VAG cars are no worse than others from Ford, vaux etc.

The sad fact is if you are the 2nd or 3rd owner and the car has been thrashed then quite often you get the sticky end of the stick replacing the worn bits. Having said that if its just mechanical and you can do the work yourself its still possible to put the car right at a fair cost and end up with a good car.

I moved from Ford because my wife thought that she would like a Polo (I had bought a Passat a couple of years before this). My only problem with the Ford Fiesta was replacing the combined switch assembly ever two years and the exhaust mid and rear sections twice in 8 years. I think that you will find that the Porche family are actually huge money people that also own a sports car company and have a controlling share holding in VAG - and are currently getting a bit of stick from the financial institutions for holding the share price of VAG up - so the banks etc can't make money out of them - what a shame for the banks etc - not!!

For confirmation, go post a message on the Golf owners forum, Titled "Are Golf's ****" and see what reaction you get.
