The ridge in the inlet side of the cylinder head.. If its the part i think your reffering to, removing it can actually make the head worse. Big thing on these PD lumps is maintaining the swirl, and this ridge plays a big part in it.

Hello Tom,
These heads don't use rifling to swirl the intake, it's a casting issue due to the head being mass produced.
If you can imagine the port is engineered by milling from two angles, one from the combustion chamber and one from the inlet flange.
Clean that up and you improve the intake efficiency.
Audi have only just started rifling VAG inlets and that's on a petrol, a well calculated head will perform better without rifling.
A small update is the EGR block offs have been made from carbon, the pistons, wrist pins and rods have been weighed, balanced and matched.
Now just got to finish the EGR valve completely, set the ring gaps and start building the beauty......photos to follow.

Hello Everbody,

Sorry for the lack of updates, but been mega busy doing other bits and pieces and waiting on parts etc from USA!

I have prepared the block which consisted of honing the bores and checking ovality, would have been nice to go for a .5mm overbore and fit a set of parallel rods to match but money is tight with racing and all.

So I have stuck with stock pistons which I have cleaned up and fitted new rings. Interesting to find that even on a 60,000 mile old piston the rings were pinched in the ring deck from a build up of carbon, no wonder these engines start to wear bores out quickly as they age; the rings are seized in the pistons and just shave the bore away.

The photos below show a piston before and after cleaning and also the Race Developments finished crankshaft sat in the block on new bearings.

Let me know what you guys think!!

I am also looking for a full Milltek system (inc downpipe) to go on this if anyone is selling one!

Cheers!

Unfortunately I dont have my pd leon now but when I did have the car I had the head off at 157k and there was no bore wear or ring issue you speak of.
My car made 215hp and 390lbft at 155k with;
Hybrid by turbotechnics
jabba map
130 head with 150 injectors
Decat with full magnex
Pipercross panel
All other stuff stock.
I flashed a 256hp S3 out of the way at 135mph, it went off the clock almost.
Is there a real need for all the mods you are doing!
I had my car timed with gps at 30 to 70 through the gears in under 5 seconds!
Plenty fast enough!

Imagine how good it would have been with a proper engine build!

This sort of work increases volumetric efficiency, reduces internal friction and ultimately increases horsepower before you even start with the bolt on parts!
