Guys,

First of all hi, Im Richard and the wife has a Leon FR which we both love, very impressed with it!!

Hopefully you can help with a query.....

I have to be honest and say I am more than a little disappointed with the MPG on her Leon, we did a trip to Alton Towers over the weekend and only returned 35mpg driving at just under 80mph?!?!?!?

My Focus RS would have returned better!!!!

Is this normal? Im thinking it CANT be surely???

Cheers :p

Iv got a Leon fr 170 and I'm getting around 51 mpg on my 300 mile drive to Scotland doing about 70/75 mph and that's the majority being motorways

I have the same 07 petrol fr and would say thats about right my best was 40mpg on a trip to South Wales last year doing 70 in 6th gear, mid to late 30s for a petrol fr,cupra would be about right for that journey imo.

I don't know how far Alton Towers is away from you but on a long motorway run of say 100miles in my old PD170 Leon I could touch 49-50mpg if I did 60mph, 70mph would return 45mpg and 80 would be about 40. Of course a lot of it depends on your driving style. Doing 80 is a bit vague really, I know some people that can do 80 with foot flat down then lift off then flat down to 80 again and so on. I would check your tyre pressures and oil level before getting to worried.

The PD170 engine is a bit pants when it comes to MPG, the CR170 on the other hand is very good, My Exeo that weighs more than my old Leon can manage mid to high 50's mpg with ease on a long run at 70 and it's consistently 10mpg better whatever.

Thanks for the reply!! The 80mph was driven mostly under cruise control with very little in the way of pedal use! (200 odd miles each way to Alton Towers from daaaaan saaafff)

I will check tryes pressures and oil but I get the impression they are just a bit pants on fuel!! Gutted really!!

You have to take into account that 170ps is a lot from a 2.0 derv (actually they make a good bit more than that normally) and the FR badge on the boot means something totally different to an ecomotive badge.

Oil level and tyre pressures on the PD170 Leon can make a bit of difference.

There will be someone along in a minute that will tell you all about how cruise control is worse on fuel and how hypermiling has saved them £23 this year :blahblah: and they are probably correct. Cruse control is exactly that, it sets and keeps your speed, it isn't "triple figure MPG control". Slightly better MPG than some moron with no idea how to drive a car is just a by product of the constant speed that you get with CC. Personally I am a big fan of CC and I use it every day, I think it has saved me more in speeding fines than hypermiling will save me in fuel.

There are MK2 Leons that are good on fuel but they don't go very well.

Isnt that just the case!!! The ones without an FR badge might well be better on fuel but they look gash!! The same with all makes!

I suppose I just had higher hopes for MPG, mainly because the only diesels Ive had anything to do with are vans and have always had high performance petrol cars I assumed we would get 50mpg plus!

Im a massive fan of CC, the wife on the other hand HATES it! lol

40-45mpg is about the most I usually see from our FR 170 (PD) but around town and sitting in traffic it's around 37-38mpg so I would have expected you to get 40+ on a steady motorway run really....

Maybe it needs a service, new filters and such can all help - maybe try running a couple of tanks with Millers additive or at least Super/Ultimate Diesel

^^ Same, 40-45 on a long run. I can hit 40 on a short journey if I drive like miss daisy and as little as 28, if I'm really giving it some beans.

is 28 still a lot higher you would get from a petrol with the same power giving it beans?

i have a pd170 and it is remapped to 200 and when i floor it i get about 30mpg and i tell my mates its better than a petrol would get but im not sure if thats correct lol, especially with the 5p difference per litre

Mines mapped to 200bhp too.
I don't give it the full beans very often, so I'm closer to 40mpg most of the time anyway. Booting it occasionally to see 30 is neither here or there. You'd have to be driving the petrol version pretty carefully to get 30mpg.

My old Zafira GSI, all be it a bit more powerful at 240bhp used to get 25- 30 around town, driving carefully. Giving it the full beans meant 15- 20, hence why I've moved to diesel.

mpg on the pd is piss poor but it will always be better than the petrol. there is a massive difference in driving at 70 than 80 in terms of mpg. if your planning on just ccing everywhere you might wanna look at remaping it as you would use less of your engine power to stay at that speed.

Driving hard in my petrol fr sees mid to high teens sensible driving around town might see low to mid 20s on short journeys and mid to high 20s on longer ones as most of my driving is short trips hence i opted for petrol just a coparrison for you derv owners.

What mileage is on the car currently ?? I only ask cause I noticed an improvement as the miles have increased on mine.

Mine is the CR170 (59 reg) its now on 28K miles and on a run at 70-80mph i see an average for that journey of anything up to 51mpg with the overall average (never reset this) reading 49mpg.

70mpg (using cruise) see's anything up to 53mpg and the long stint on the M1 of 50mph cameras sees this increase to around 57-60mpg (yes, 60mpg !!!)...

Agree with Nath though, make sure the tyres pressures are right and the oil is where it should be, mine hasnt used hardly any in the last 28K miles though, only used around 500ml to top up and thats keeping the dip stick around the 3/4 mark.

lol camera's that measure mpg now that is worrying.

And mine is on 28k too fox, when did your service like come on cos mine is on now and thats like 2k early, over 100k thats 2 bloody services! anyway might have summat to do that mine has used a fair bit of oil but i had some problems last winter so might be the reason, plus the oem+ bit obviously.

Since i hit 40k my MPG has been alot better, But ive also removed my EGR so that is adding to it
