You are suppose to take a copy of it before you embark on deleting it !. That's why it's better to buy a 16gb mib2 card that the latest mib1 fits on will work. That way you have your old map card and the new card and you don't have to hack the maps down to fit.

There is a copy of the map card on the thread... how these card work if you have a copy of before the year release it works but after it doesn't. Old works, new doesn't. So you can use an old map file in the car then start the edits, if you follow. That's how mib2 standard works.

A version 4 contents will work with a unit that had version 5 in it. Get that working then edit the version onto the latest release.

If you had version 4 but lost it, version 5 wouldn't be much good. You can always search eBay if nobody steps forward to help.

Clear as mud.

It won't break the bank buying another card. I've got three I use on mib2 . With the hacking of the latest mib1 files to get it to fit onto the old 8gb card add at a level of problem solving since you don't know whether you have manufactured the header correctly or messes up the edits. Why I say buy a second card, keep your first card as is.

Another reason to get a 2nd card is that they do fail sometimes, due to being in constant use in the car etc.

SD cards can and do fail. I see it sometimes in other systems where they are used to hold an operating system. It is commonly associated with excessive writing to the card and the solution is to use an industrial rated card in that case. The nav systems should not be writing to the card much (if at all) but it is still a risk when reprogramming the card.

I didn't have a good experience with a Raspberry Pi running server software for iPlayer radio. It did two cards in. I'd have a backup to write a new one. Did shift it to more durable micro SDs cards. Too much data traffic.

That was a lesson that they can wear them out. That software is a stop gap for people with fancy sound systems which got rendered useless when the BBC changed to DASH / HLS from MP3. You get the same sample rate with the iPlayer on Android based devices so you just connected them up to your fancy sound system but a bitter pill for some people to swallow. Nvidia here on a Sony surround system wack the TV off for audio only. The fancy sound systems didn't have enough processing power in them for DASH / HLS hence the server software.

I've joined the forum specifically re these "hacks" for the MIB1 Satnav units. Well done on the research etc.!

Slight quandary on my part.

My car:- 2015 build MK7 Golf estate with Discover Media MIB1 Satnav, & factory Dynaudio

Hardware:- 041
Software:- 0486
Navigation Database:-
5G0919866BD0094 ECE 2020/21

Factory SD card:-
Volkswagen Navigation AT
Europa (V5)
5G0 919 866 N

Now I understand that its an 8GB card & that I can download the 2023yr maps from the MIBsolutions page you link to, remove any countries I don't want & alter the DBinfo file. I also understand that there is a hack to get TMC working..(I have VCDS).

My query is that I have seen VW cards labelled for the "Volkswagen Discover Media Navigation AT" from several UK sellers for circa £38 to £50, that supposedly have 2024-2025yr maps on them!...

How is this possible if 2023yr is the last that works? Is it worth paying out as I can't find cheap totally blank VW branded cards (reputable) with the CID on them.

Link to one of the sellers...

The link you gave is for a V18 card which is the latest 2023/4 version as far as I know. Are you sure that the 2024-2025 maps are not MIB2?

They might have rolled their processes on a year or it's a typo. Audi must have found a market for mib1 maps after they had stopped producing them. They were done for Audi but can be used with that work around on Seat's and Skoda's. I've haven't read of them being used on VWs. Your link does say mib1 that is true. Is it a 16gb card since the new mib1 won't all fit on a 8gb card without hacking.

You pay your money and take your choice. If they say mib1 and it's a 16gb card then you got the proper map file, if 8gb it isn't.

If you need it for mib1 and prepared to take a gamble you can buy an eBay old mib2 card which are quite cheap and try the workaround, 16gb, with VAG CID and no hacking countries out to fit. You might need that firmware update. The success on Seat and Skoda seems to be on the very latest firmware.

Either way do take a copy of your card as is for backup else you'll end up like some asking for a copy since you have lost it. I think you'll find the release of the Audi one above somewhere. This is where someone had lost theirs.

The TMC should work 15 to 14. You can try that out as is. Gives you Inrix. That's working on mib1 units.

I have no idea about the details of the ad..I'll have to message the person..

I already have a copy on my PC of all the files.

I've updated the SD card in the past 10yrs using either the VW software or manually downloading/unzipping the files on my computer & then copying the unzipped files onto the SD card, having deleted the older files...

I have:-
Hardware:- 041
Software:- 0486

So I don't need a firmware update as software higher than 0480..??

Yes the firmware number does look on the upper side so probably is fine. The advert did say mib1, highly likely as Dave said a mib2 card. The companies that sell map updates can be sharks since the free ones are on the brands website and linked to the servers as here, the bought ones are from the car dealers and the cheap one from Ebay. So the map card companies are tapping into people seeing their advert but not knowing what they are buying. ;)

Thats the trouble still abit wild west!

I'd like to keep my old 8gb card intact as a full back-up, & just get a good OEM 16gb or 32gb (would it work?) & then get the maps..but they all call them different years...I take it the so called "2023yr MIB1" maps for mine (on Mibsolutions) are on the 2023yr or are they on the 2023/24 release?

Also some are saying the latest card is "V19"..?? EDIT...thats for newer units only?

Just tried downloading the 2023yr maps from Mibsolution to hack down to below 8Gb for my old V5 card......their network keeps disconnecting!...I'll try it another day. Anyway I've pinged an email to the seller I linked to above & asked them a few questions re the V18 card & maps on it....see what I get back..

If you can get yourself a 16GB VW card from a MIB2 system you could save yourself a lot of hassle. Keep your 8Gb card untouched just in case. And remember the golden rule - never, ever under any circumstances format the card. Just delete files from the card.
