Pretty sure I got caught speeding.
Since growing wiser, I'm normally fixated on MPG and never speed, the one time I speed I get caught.

No complaints as I know I did wrong, just hoping it's a Band A and not Band B, speedo was reading 81.

Morale of the story: Save it for a track day

Depends what the limit you got done in was. Your speed was about 78ish, which is just inside Band A for a 60mph limit (80) and inside the 70. If it was a 50 or below (naughty) then it's a band C job - oops!

Band A in a 40 is 41-55, Band B is 56-65, and Band C (aka screwed) is 66 and above.

If you've got previous (I think within 3 years) it'll be 3 points and a fine. If not, then you *should* be offered an awareness course (cost, but no points and no conviction, in the eyes of your insurers).

Unless you're in Scotland or there are other circumstances, I would say 99% you will be offered a speed awareness course. Rule of thumb is to stay below the 10% limit unless you're absolutely sure you won't get done.

If I get itchy I just remind myself how much it would suck to have to walk everywhere! Or failing that, take it to a country lane so narrow that doing 35mph requires balls..........

Right where a dual carriageway crests a hill and drops to both single lane and 40mph in the space of about 50ft. Officers laughed that they’d caught tons of holiday makers because unless you know the area it catches everyone out. They were literally gunning the crest of the hill. Gave me my paperwork, and before we’d even got out of sight they’d stuck their lights on and caught someone else (towing a caravan). Absolutely disgraceful. There was a roundabout not even 200yards further on, so you had to be slowing down anyway - was just an excuse to ticket people

Ah, I forgot about Wales! How do you know you got caught speeding? I, or someone I know have been through a speed trap doing 35+ once (don't ask, adaptive cruise), and was fine. Equally, I, or someone I know, passed a speed van not doing the speed limit, and no letter came.

Was this A470/M4 or somewhere around there? I remember seeing something very similar a few weeks ago on a MTB trip - roads were so wet I was doing 40 anyway, but can see how it causes issues... Similar with a road near me in Hampshire, nice and straight 60 (capacity to do triple digits is easily there), you go round a slight bend, and it's suddenly a 30, with zero warning and a speed trap 50ft ahead.

I quite liked in Wales recently (I think the bit where it suddenly turned 40), there were warning markers coming down from NSL to the 40, in the same way you have exit or roundabout approach markers.

Every time I ponder the NSL being raised above 70mph I see some absolute tool on the road (like the driver I encountered in heavy rain, at 11pm, on the middle lane on the M3, with not a single light on), and wonder how most humans are allowed to operate cars....

Ah! You *might* be lucky then. I only say this as, AFAIK, only fixed speed cameras or speed vans have the capability to record an offenders details (plate, etc). If the device is handheld, then the officer has to physically stop you (as I assume he won't have been able to get your plate as you flashed under him doing 80). By the same reasoning, if a car 'paces' you, it has to then pull you over.

For instance, the traditional speeding letter has a photo (or two) of the car doing the offence. Since handheld devices can't do that, what would be in the letter? "Hi CalJames, Officer Patrick Clover says you were doing 80mph. He has no evidence, but yeah."

Not saying you're off the hook (will have to wait for 2 weeks yet), but if it was just a handheld device and nobody came after you or pulled you down the road, you might be alright... generally the handheld guys are there to catch people doing a ton or so - I've never really heard of anyone being pulled for doing under 85/90.

I won't get into my incident last year, where an unmarked armed police X5 pulled out on me with no indication on an unlit, pitch black, country road. After I flashed him (obviously had no idea it was police), he then decided to stop dead in the middle of the road, at which point I sat on the horn and floored it past him. They didn't like this - pulled me and threatened me with all sorts of things, with their guns out. They then STUCK to my bumper all the 15 miles home, waiting for me to make a mistake on all the tricky road works speed limits.

Shame, as I always had a high regard for the police (21yo, home is London), but I'd find it difficult now after their actions. They were completely 100% in the wrong, but at the end of the day, they've got a HK416 rifle and I don't!

Couple of updates today!

My replacement turbo inlet pipe arrived from Darkside Developments, to replace the OEM pipe which had split on one of the joints (causing the MAF sensor to chuck the car into limp mode).

Installation was ridiculously easy - undo the clamp holding the OEM elbow to the MAF housing, undo the MAF sensor and remove vacuum pipe from the stock airbox, and simply pull the airbox out. Then with space now free to work in, undo the jubilee clip holding the OEM elbow to the turbo inlet (7mm socket if anyone ever reads this) - it then comes straight off

Then in with the new silicone elbow! Quality is absolutely spot on, thicker than standard plastic yet flexible enough to make installing the airbox back into place an absolute doddle. Also significantly larger internal diameter, and smooth all the way through - I feel like this should automatically add a gazillion extra horsepower, but it certainly can’t hurt

Added bonus is it looks awesome in situ as well. All tightened up and no more boost issues!

Part two - whilst I’d got the airbox out I took the opportunity to finally get around to removing the stock air duct, and doing the ‘pikey r600’ mod.

Is this necessary for diesels? No probably not. Did I want to do it anyway? Yes. Yes I did.

So out came the duct, and I took a dremel to it. End result turned out pretty nicely - sanded the cut edges back with a rasp, deburred with a sharp chisel. No feels completely smooth with absolutely no loose plastic or rough edges. I might paint it at some point just to hide the sanding marks, but that’s just OCD given it’s completely hidden when installed

Airbox and engine bay no longer have to fight over cold air:

Between this and the silicone elbow, I’m now enjoying a small amount of extra turbo noise and a faintly audible (and satisfyingly childish) induction whoosh

Did the 6-year service on the Leon. All went smoothly, with a nice bonus that
I was able to remove the oil filter by hand, without having to resort to any of
my selection of 'removal' tools - offering 3 levels of butchery/desperation

This time the service included swapping tyres from front-back to even-out the
wear rates - but damn those SEAT 17" wheels seemed heavy. Although it's true
enough I'm getting older, I checked on the bathroom scales and they came-in
at 19.8 Kg! At least it made me feel smug that my Golf's current 16" x 7" Bini
Revolite combo weigh 4.6 Kg less each wheel...

I managed to buckle a wheel and crack another. Just got PS5s on the rear and planned to get them on the front too. Garage didn’t have 5s and couldn’t get them, so had to go with 4s on the front. Even with £80 off I’m a bit bummed out.

Oh, and the £1000 for 4 new wheels isn’t great either!!
