Near a hundredweight over your head, Nasty.

I hate gearboxes for their habit of slipping off jacks & bending the clutchplate.
Hello to a dragging clutch which will drive you mad after all that work.

I use a wooden beam to span the engine bay with a couple of dywidags through a pair of
holes bored through the beam above the support eyes for the engine & gearbox.
Loops of rope hang each lump of gubbins to the hooked dywidag nuts.
You can now easily raise,& lower & twist the gearbox with ease.

X2 on the arsepain that is the drive shaft flange getting hooked on the sandwich plate.

dywidags are the threaded bars, hooked nuts & washer plates used for concrete formwork.

I'm the same - I've watched this one more times than I can remember - does it without a transmission jack too.

I've not seen your video before though - that'll give me something to do on the loo.

Yeah I've seen both of those videos, nothing about doing them is particularly complex and I must have pulled at least 40 of these gearboxes out now but I'm just all all about making the process as easy as possible these days plus who doesn't love an improv tool.

Yeah just watched it myself, he made it look fairly straight forward even with doing it on axel stands, I know for sure it would never go to plan for me lol, and I'm positive it's a job I'd not like to do, do going to look after it best I can. Great insight into it though 👍.

Finally got the res delete pipe yesterday and fitted it today, it sounds perfect, not too loud when cruising but give it some beans and it sounds so much better, DSG farts are louder when belting it.
I didn't want a loud exhaust so this suits me perfect for the long trips through Europe.

Following on from a previous gearbox talk...I made this from an old trolley jack I had laying around the workshop for years.

Completely stripped & sanded down, old castor mounts chopped off and replaced with box section welded on to increase wheelbase and stability.
This also allows the use of 4 larger castors for added manoeuvrability on my rough concrete barn floor.
Handle chopped in half and welded in situ so it's easier to use beneath a vehicle.
M12 nut welded onto the release valve so it can be done by hand and without the faff of a keyed handle.
Painted and fresh hardware used where possible.
I've had to order the gearbox top cradle in as I didn't really have the correct material available at work plus it's saves me a bit of time.
Either way it's saved me a couple of hundred quid I reckon.

The castor wheels are rated to 400kg combined and the I believe the top cradle is rated to 500kg so all should be more than ample for transmission shuffling duties.

Removed the headlining, removed some unnecessary wiring, changed my battery mount clamp to a rivnut type thing so it's easier to use.

Just need to remount the alarm sensors and get a rear wishbone bush (so I can measure the diameter for R&D... unless someone has one to hand to measure for me)

that's the problem theses days its a throw away society, just because its old don't mean its crap there always better once a bit of tlc is used , done same with allot of my 110v power tools and 240v , stripped down cleaned them up and applied new lithium grease they sound new now lol thing is there still on the same brushes, replaced the garage roof with a old plasta coted corrugated roof that needed some tlc as someone on the st was replacing the garage and was better then the old asbestos roof, i do what you have done allot and saves allot , good job that and i bet it takes more weight than its rated as old gear is over engineered

I had my clutch, timing belt and wishbones all changed on the drive over the last 3 years.

That clutch looks bad unless seized in , changed ball joints on mine as its a common fault as one was going but were not as bad as then wtf, used genuine also when i ordered all the fixings ,plate are all a separate part why not come as a kit is beyond me as your not going to buy parts separate, job must of cost a few quid and bet you can feel a big difference

that battery mount bolt is welded in unless the weld broke , mine was a bit sized when replacing battery so used copper grease

The factory setup broke so had to drill and smash it out. Had used a reversed bolt with a couple of nuts but it was a pita to use, thus the jack/spider nut solution

Short stint in the garage this morning.

Cam (hopefully) timed a little better as it felt down on power, idle was a tad rough, and MPG was horrendous.

Swapped a couple of glow plugs around as got a light on saying No.3 was not right. Best case I didn't plug it in correctly to begin with, worst case I'm replacing the glow plug wiring.

Definitely want the hard pipe kit for it though as just getting at the glow plugs is a nightmare with the standard boost pipe in the way

I think i may have a glowplug harness in my toolbox at my mums. Came off my 2004 150pd Leon. I was trying to fix a fault on my car and replaced mine but that wasn't the problem.
If you need it, let me know and I'll pop to my mums and see if i still have it.

Yeah, it was slipping slightly and then a week later just exploded on the motorway doing a steady 70. Mobile guy was £100 cheaper than the cheapest garage quite though and he did a top job.
