I agree but working towards stage 2.
Thing is my cats are 16 years old and got 112k under their belts and still p!ss the emissions test.
Say 5 years and 50k miles, how well will a sport cat be doing by then?
Im proper torn as what to do.

Maybe bigger down pipe, twin cats and my 2.75in from the cats back.

And get the remap done properly rather than a set flash program.

The timing part you definitely need the right tools for to give you the confidence you're getting it right, but the rest is just moving things out of the way.

That's the thing - I have a feeling nobody thought we'd be driving these cars as long as we have done - and beforehand I don't think many people gave much thought to how long a cat would last...

Yeah I understand it all. TDC marks , marking he belts etc I’d be happier if I had a shop I could do it in over he winter

Save up and get a garage to do it.
Easy for me to say, i know.
But were in the darkest depths of winter and with this lockdown not a lot is happening. As long as its ready for the summer so you can enjoy it ?

Thing is AMD are the cheapest I’ve found at 360 that’s a lot of money

Would agree to get it done at a garage if you're not totally confident - it's not an especially difficult job, but it's an important job and can have huge ramifications if it's not right - I'd put it on the same level of clutch and brakes in that regard.

Don't forget that it's a bread and butter job for most garages, so unless AMD is the only decent local garage, a half decent mechanic will be able to do this without any trouble. The parts are less than £100 and a few hours' work does sound about right.

I’ve done complete re builds on brakes and I’ve done belts in the past. I’m rusty lol. I’ll probably shop it just for piece of mind

What I'd love is for there to be workshops in every large-ish town where you can work on your own car and have access to tools and lifting equipment. Get a real community going around it... From changing your own oil to putting in a new clutch, paying specialists to come in and take you through certain jobs, from easy beginner stuff to masterclasses.

Might even look into it post pandemic.

Trying to remember where this was actually a thing, think it was in Japan but not 100% sure. Discussed it with a friend some time back as we both had cars to work on and plenty of friends in the same position. Think we decided the insurance costs were prohibitive

There seem to be a couple of places in the UK that do it - one I've found in Oxfordshire called 'This is your garage' - but I think you're right about it being an insurance issue. I'm guessing there are all kinds of disclaimers you've got to sign and then you've got all kinds of things you need insurance cover for, from who's responsible for that snapped bolt in the exhaust manifold to getting crushed by a lift. That's bound to put casual people off - which leaves you with the enthusiasts who have made do with axle stands on their driveway and aren't that fussed about changing that.

I hate talking myself out of my own ideas.

I mean things have moved on, it could be charge a membership fee, keep a card and ID on file, sign lots of disclaimers then... rock on. I mean there are still scrappys letting people in to remove parts (although a rarity) so could be possible
