Air intake mod

I've seen a couple of posts about removing the 'snow grate' from the airbox, adding a K&N filter and modifying the air intake that runs on top of the radiator. I've done the first two and decided to give the third one a whirl...

This is the stock piece. The bit on the right is what we're going to open up. It sits right in front of the airbox.

Cut and ground it away with a Dremmel.

I smoothed out everything on the left too, sanded it down, and de-burred with a sharp chisel.

You need to lift this up and out of the way when re-installing.

What’s the snow grate for? Just to stop snow getting in I guess?

Prevents snow to hit the filter.

I have:

Elbow pipe from HG motorsport, K&N filter and opened up air duct with Dremmel as shown in this tread.

If you have done this mod there is a good reason to keep the “snow grate” since water hits it during high speed travel, e.g. autobahn/DE 1000 km in heavy rain. I have looked into the box and there were trace of water after a visit in Germany. I haven’t noticed anything during ordinary use in my nearby area. Perhaps it’s not a big deal if some water hits the filter but I don’t like it. It will be drained out via drain hose in the low part of air box.

On Cupra the intake channel is rather protected behind the "grill" but water will find it's way if the pressure is high.

Anyone did this on facelift 1.4?
Fittted with different airfilter box no snow grade.
I just cut out right hand on air intake but question worth to close the engine side and/or fit front guard (gte part)
Any risk water going to filter?

Thanks for the link. I’ve now blanked off the engine side intake on the inside of the engine bay. The only air going in now is being forced in through the front. The previous layout was open straight through to the engine bay resulting in turbulent air.
Been for a quick drive already and can feel a difference. OBD fusion is also reporting higher air flow and lower intake temperature. Result!

By the way, the blanking plate is £20. For now I’ve sealed the engine bay side opening with some self adhesive heat insulation pad.

I have a ramair induction kit and turbo elbow on my Cupra 290. Do you think if I cut this section out of my intake I will get more noise from my induction kit as it’s getting more air in?
Does the factory intake that runs on top of the radiator still feed cold air to your induction kit? I’d highly recommend seeing if you have the rear backing plate in place and open up the passenger side on the intake. Car was definitely noisier this morning!

I haven’t blocked the other side. Have some thoughts about the need of ventilation to the engine bay. Perhaps I should buy the plate 5Q0129849 to increase the flow to the air duct.

This is a very cheap mod in total Elbow/Filter/Plate instead of a new intake :).

I did tape on back but later removed it. Im not sure why that side open if 1.4 gte use same engine but that back side blocked.
However the front plate ordered make sure water not going in to filter.

Well it’ll still feed air to the induction kit but just not very directly as it has to travel to the other side of that airbox. Whereas once I cut the other side it should flow better. What is the backing plate? Do I need to add something once I’ve cut out the passenger side of the airbox?

I am no expert but if you block the open duct to the engine bay you are reducing the air flow to engine bay but increasing the flow and or pressure of air into the air filter box, However (again I am no expert) this does not create a smooth airflow).
I was happy to cut the passenger side open (I did it on my 280 many years ago) But not sure I would want to reduce air flow to engine bay (as these engine run hot).

I would also point out this may be a regional difference as the Nordics have very different climate to us.

Finally just checked on my Revo Carbon intake and it still has an opening on the drivers side but its smaller than on the stock item and the air channel to the air filter has been designed with a smooth curve (on the drivers side) for the air rather than a blunt solid wall which I would have though caused air turbulance.

The reality is this mod does not make big change but is one of those small changes that help as you start going further up the power chain.

Repeat I am no expert just my thoughts.

This is a super cheap mod with no downsides that I can see. The engine is getting cold air forced into it and isn’t sucking in warm engine bay air. Win. :)

Hot air being sucked in makes very little difference on a turbo car.
It's only going to get made hotter by the turbo.

You only need to worry about IAT after the intercooler.

I figure it’s less work for the intercooler.

Looks like the IAT has dropped from what I can see. I’ll do some more runs and see if it’s consistent.
