Golf R and Leon Cupra (my thoughts)

Definitely shows the traction advantage of the VW and then potentially the weight advantage of the SEAT.

If both are DSG then reduces requirement on driver skill in this type of race.

That said though I don't know the specs of either vehicle.

That seems very quick for a stock Cupra. But, as you say, we don't know specs, tyres or even lane conditions.
I was impressed how quickly the Cupra R hauled in the Civic Type R in the Carwow vid. It's obviously big hairy Spanish stallions against some weedy Jap ponies.

The R comes with Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, any idea what the CTR comes with?

Which aren’t as good as the PS4S which alsrhough exceptional, not as good as the PSC2’s on the R.

But I do like both. My inner child likes the Halfords part bin look of the R and CTR :D

I was highlighting it was possibly the tyres helping out the R anyway :bounce:

The Cup2 tyres work well in the damp, it’s standing water and the cold they’re not to fond of.

Stick PS4S on both and then compare may make them closer.

However if you’re comparing car as is from the manufacturer it appears the R is quicker in the dry.

It’s like the whole Top Gear P1 vs La Ferrari Vs that Porsche. Why put different tyres on them? You buy the car as is. And as is the P1 wins.

Equally though some great cars are ruined by the tyres. Best thing I did on this new car was swap the Contis for PS4S’s.

I had Conti 5Ps on my Golf and they were actually quite good - better than the detestable Bridgestones I had on my Cupra 280 at one point. I now have PS4Ss on my Golf and they are fantastic. I’d actually say my 280 cornered better than my Golf but as an all round car, my Golf wins. It’s only minor things but it’s those minor things that make it a more “complete” car. It took a few months of ownership to discover but it was worth it. That’s not to detract from the 280 though - it excels in some areas that the Golf doesn’t.

Having gone from a 280 ST DSG to a 300 ST DSG 4 drive, the 280 with the VAQ diff definetly handles better, quicker too after the initial 0-30.

Changing the tyres took it closer in the handling and front end ‘feel’ but it’s still missing that edge the 280 had (which was on Pilot Super Sports).

Given the choice, if I could keep the car as is and just swap out the 4 drive for the VAQ diff, I’d do it. I’d happily lose the 0-60 for the faster overall and better handling. I may change my mind if it snows.

However too many other better things on the Carbon than the 280 to want to swap back. And I’m working on getting that feel with a few simple tweaks :) it’s probably 90% there with the tyres. Next step is a strut brace. Last step would be camber plates by 034 motorsport.

Is it true that despite the Golf R and Cupra ST 4Drive being 4wd, this is only really 4wd on acceleration and when more grip is required? Else it runs (eg...crusing, or normal city (non Hooligan) driving, it's usually just FWD anyway? Or is it mainly RWD, and uses the extra FWD when needs traction?

Yes it is front wheel bias.

"The mechanical heart of this system is the “Haldex coupling.” The coupling is an electro-hydraulically operated clutch that is capable of attaching and decoupling the rear axle. Under normal driving conditions the Golf R sends power to its front wheels only, saving fuel. When the coupling engages, though, it can send up to 50 percent of the power to the rear axle. This coupling is aided by the deepest, darkest Teutonic magic that VW could come up with. By which I of course mean computers … magic computers."

Exactly what Lmbarrett said. My R was great in the snow, even on normal tyres - passed a few Mercs and BMWs on some hills whilst they were spinning their wheels.

Because UHP tyres are fairly quickly replaced items, and some manufacturers are notorious for fitting less than optimum tyres for drag racing in particular. Which is a good thing if you live someplace where it rains.

Oulton was very slippy and wet today, lots of cars were really struggling. There was also a 520 bhp Golf R there on the same tyres as me, pretty awesome car, I also went out for a passenger ride in it. Comparing the two was interesting and demonstrated how quick a Cupra driven by the front wheels is, even in wet and slippy conditions. Not much in it, but the Cupra was quicker today. When I get round to it, I will stick some videos up. :) I did have to be a bit careful to avoid catastrophic understeer.
