I've read that the 290 has a slightly different better sounding system to the 280 and just wanted to ask which part is different? I.e back box etc and if it's just a case of changing that section to have the same system ? , maybe the part number needed? Thanks for any input.

If you're talking hatchback, It has the central silencer removed. If you're talking ST, there is no difference.

Not a technical drawing or to scale :D...

First box is the resonator. 2nd 2 boxes are the silencers.

Mid box was removed and back box changed. I have a feeling it’s very similar to the golf gti club sport exhaust unfortunately I have no part number for you. But if you know someone good with a welder then you could dissect your current back box like this https://www.cliosport.net/threads/audi-tt-225-progress.615519/

Although for a golf it’s comparable for 280 and 290. Gives you an understanding as to why there’s a difference. https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30422

I also have a feeling the map on the engines changed

Also if you look on a golf r these parts circled red are the secondary exhaust ports which are valved so should make the car a lot louder, if opened up.

Ok and thanks for all the replies , its an SC by the way , I suppose it would be easier just to get that part for the 290 and bolt it on to the 280 ? So its mainly that they removed the silencer ......

The exhaust is all one piece, so easier to get an exhaust place to cut it out

I think you have finally answered something that has bugged me for a while.

I've often wondered what the differences are between the 280 and the others apart from the middle silencer as my car has the middle silencer out and the 290 and 300 sound much sportier even on tick over. I've written post before asking but no one seemed to know other than suggesting that the 290 and 300 have a 3 inch system, I don't think they do though?

Off to eBay now to find a 290 back box someone has chopped off

The 290 also has a revised ECU to make it sound sportier too, not to mention the extra HP and Torque.

Just playing devils advocate if I may... If it's a one piece system why do all the various bits have separate part numbers?
Didn't know they had, I've only ever seen it as one part. Maybe the different part numbers are if they are doing a repair

As far As I know the eco is not tweaked for for sound and it's exactly the same torque ad the 280 and if imagine the same hp from what I read , it's just the exhaust that's changed.

Yeah I suppose so, from a consumer point of view you'd be pretty pi##ed off if you had a blowing back box and you had to replace from the cat back. I'm only going on that 7zap site that lists the part numbers. Unfortunately they have only the 265/280 system on there and not the 290/300 system so can't check if the part numbers are different.

Its interesting ill say that. Maybe worth finding a scirocco r https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Sciro...=item286b758698:g:6eYAAOSwtJxbyLKT:rk:18:pf:0
or golf r exhaust https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_...=nc&LH_ItemCondition=4&_trksid=p2045573.m1684
and trying that?

The good thing about altering the current one is the fact it still looks OEM and if your good, only peeling back the top part of the back box means no one will know until the exhaust is removed. Good for someone on lease ;)

I very fortunately have @theoldboy old 280 exhaust so when i get a chance/bored may have a go at altering the back box on that. Or at least find out what can be altered. So watch this space.

However without cutting into the a 280 exhaust and 290 exhaust, not going to know if the 'tweaked' exhuast is just a silencer removed, or the internals of the final silencer as well.

I also did a bit of digging and you can buy the 290 back box from Seat for £537 or from TPS for about £470 all in.

Not cheap are they... can get a Remus one for that kind of money with the OEM looking tips
