Air intake options?

Hi there I'm looking to upgrade the air intake/ air filter of my cupra.

I know there are a few intake systems such as forge and ITG. But I don't fancy spending £200+ on one. Ive seen dyno print out with these systems, apparently on a standard map with over 190 bhp? does the standard air box and filter really restrict over 10 bhp from the car?

I've come across after market panel filters too, has any one tried these with successful results?

Last option was to make one myself with a universal filter. I've seen people just stick a cone filter on with no cold air feed. i'm not to keen on this, as the standard air box setup would probably work better, as its not drawing in hot air from around the engine.

Any feedback and pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can just use a filter or you can use inductions.

The inductions are ITG at £300 forge £200 and universal at around £100 for the build. I have the universal in my stage 2 Cupra and it does the job. Really want to upgrade to ITG though because it is proven gains and forge is restrictive once the car is mapped from what I've read elsewhere.

If money is your issue then use Troupy's universal induction for £100 (approx) on the mk5 FAQ.

But yes these inductions do make a huge difference. According to a guy at midland VW who does remaps when I got mine done, majority of cup/bocs come out at 171-175bhp rather than 180 so it's probably nearer a 15bhp increase.

Is your universal just the cone filter? Or have you gotten one of the universal induction kits that you can buy and just pipe up?

Thank you for the reply!

cupraNW have you got any pics of you're induction set up? struggling to find Troupy's but I think i remember reading about quite a while ago.

Also what sort of bhp where you making with stage 1 and this set up?

I was thinking about a system like this as i dont really want an exposed filter in the engine bay. Want the air nice and cool before it goes in to the inter cooler :)

That's the same sort of stuff ad I was looking at and then if need be change the filter inside if possible to something a bit better

I might have to take some measurements once this rain stops! only thing i can think of is that might be a problem, is if the filter block part is to small and narrow it might restrict the airflow being sucked.

Going to see if i can find the measurements for the forge and ITG system, compare to these universal systems.

I'm lucky the battery if in the boot, so have more space to play with.

Never seen that K&N filter fitted to the car, would be good to see how it looks and if there are any performance gains.

Definitely luckier, I was thinking of putting my battery in the boot but I don't really want to loose the spare tyre :/
But I've always got the option of if the standers air box is out to move the battery back a bit in the bay

Can still have spare tyre in boot with battery in boot you just need the foam packers to raise the boot floor

I'll get a photo tomorrow mate it's too dark at the moment haha.

I'm stage 2 now but at stage 1 with just induction I was running 207bhp which was a bit on the low side apparently. Probably could've gotten 210+ with a proper induction but my car wasn't having any of it when he was trying to push more power (running on v power)

Yo man, did you manage to get a picture of your induction? And do you think the one That jkane92 sent the eBay link to would work?

Cheers!

Better use a pipercross foam filter, is the best for any car. I use K&N with my Stage 1 1.4 TSI, later APR Carbonio with my Stage 2 and now on Stage 3 with 330bhp im using the Pipercross Foam Filter, the difference is like 10 - 11bhp on Stage 3, Forge, K&N or Carbonio are good but restrictive filters, with a foam filter you must clean this if is dirty. Less restriction = more bhp and torque but less filter function. But avoid bigger particles.
