I notice you have the cupra r, what do you think I might be getting a cupra when I get a proper job since ave about to finish uni, should I get the new cupra R with 280bhp and get it to over 300bhp or just get the old cupra r with 260bhp?

Ask when you're at the rolling road which one will work best with the 'box' you've just Spunked your money on :)

There is no new Cupra R as yet. You can get a Cupra 280 in the new model. Mk 2 is 265 out of the box. Your money, your choice. If you are young insurance ( particularly with mods) may be a deciding factor in which model to buy and/or modify

My two penneth worth:

My experience of tuning boxes are as follows................

One cheap one that that did nothing on my Furby and one expensive one that dumped all its power in one, hang-on-tight-how-long-is-my-clutch-gonna-last kind of way with lots of smoke on my Cupra tdi Leon mk1

My experience with remaps are as follows.....................

Revo stage 1 on the above Leon that gave extra across the rev range with no extra smoke. Their official figures were 190 bhp and 290 ft/lb torque. It certainly felt it.
I did 25k in that car without any problems whatsoever and back then I drove like I stole it more often than not.

Revo stage 1 with my mk1 Octy vRS 20v 1.8T. I put 80-90k on that car with the map and it was faultless with 210bhp and 232 ft/lb torque.

Abbott Racing stage 1 on a 112k Saab 9000 2.0 lpt taking it from 150 bhp to 190bhp.
Again no problems over 2 years and approx 25k.

FWIW DTUK do seem to have a better rep and I would also suggest Steinbauer. Abbott Racing used the latter on the 2.2 TiD engine and they certainly wouldn't risk your engine.

The bottom line for me is a remap is a no brainer and wanting a cheaper, unknown box just so the Op can take it off and put on another car means only one thing:

He will potentially be able to damage more than one car! As for the quoted power gains I am afraid the Op is being a little naive to say the least and gives the impression that he doesn't really want to listen to the advice he originally sought!

Just thought id share my experience of running a diesel with a tuning box which I had fitted for over 2yrs. This was my previous car a fiat bravo 2.0 MJ. Yes it did produce more power /torque than standard but never had it on a rolling road for any performance figures. . Running a tuning box was not without its problems. It produced a lot of smoke under hard acceleration, sometimes everybody behind simply disappeared in huge cloud of black smoke!!The car went into limp mode under hard acceleration which could sometimes be dangerous during overtaking. I tended to be a little bit cautious with the boost adjustment to minimise this happening. As a result of the excess fuel being delivered it caused the ERG valve to gum up . after cleaning several times i blanked it off.

Yes the tuning box worked but I would never put one on my FR due to the issues listed above. The mpg figures on the trip computer were simply bogus due to the false readings being fed to the ECU. A proper map specific to my car from REVO would be my choice if I wanted to mod the power without risking ''side effects'' and possible engine damage.

What if ,it actually does show the claimed bhp does that mean we all have to go buy one ?

Only if you have a dirty diesel :D well, dirty in the engine sense, I know yours is so polished it slips through the air 10% quicker anyway :p

Regardless of any results I will never ever in my life buy a tuning box. He could come back saying he set a new land speed record when travelling to Australia and back in one tank....I still wouldn't go near one.
