Hi mate, how are you getting on with the Philips unit?

Hi, the unit itself is very nice powered up, I had to go back to the seller about the GPS IGo8 software as it was failing to start but very promptly he gave me the solution (delete the POIs for the countries you don't need) and the handbrake cable tip seems to have been spot on.

My problem and the reason why the unit isn't currently sitting in my car is that the fascia kit which I got and the double din cage sits in has much larger retaining clips than the Seat fascia I took out and I can't see any method by which they would fit other than cunning adaptation with a hacksaw and file. Obviously I'm not particularly keen to do this and have asked the supplier for his suggestions.

What people are going to say is that in the FAQ, point 3 is
"3) do a search on eBay for a VW Golf Mk5 fascia. (approx £9-15) This will fit in the SEAT sat-nav fascia adaptor and then you can put in your aftermarket headunit.
If installing a double-din unit then you will need to cut out the middle bar in the VW Golf fascia adaptor."
This kit unexpectedly doesn't contain this so I am wondering whether it would be better to get one of these and wait for the genuine Seat fascia part to arrive (it is on back order)

No personal experience but I looked at these kind of units for some time before going with the Philips CED 1800BT linked to on EBay for the reliablity of the Brand name. No regrets so far as it seems to be of the quality I would have expected.

So to get everything on the Philips CED1800BT working from a wiring perspective you need.
From the Connects2 website
Part No. CTSST001.2
Part No. CTPHILIPSLEAD - the single cable connects to the Brown SWC Lead that comes out of the Philips (the other 4 SWC leads don't seem to be needed)
A Fakra Aerial convertor. These three things should come to about £50 to £55

Tips on fitting
Connect the pink handbrake sensor to ground.
With the Philips unit, you have to tell any GPS software you run on it (I would imagine anything that runs on Win CE/Pocket PC will work) the Baud rate and Com port of the GPS receiver which is 9600 and COM2 - although IGO will autodetect.

The physical fitment has been slightly complicated by a couple of things but I hope to have this sorted this week - mainly an issue of not really knowing what questions to ask.
I'm writing this down because if it had been written anywhere when I looked, life would have been awfully simple.

Yes certainly will when I have it fitted and can post URLs which I still can't, I understand why there are rules like this and I suppose I could go around the forum putting up daft (or dafter) comments just to get enough posts but that goes against the grain.

Fakra aerial cable convertors, I kind of vaguely knew that the blue cable was something to do with signal amplification but assumed that I didn't need to connect it to anything as FM is extremely good. However AM/Medium Wave I discovered is absolutely rubbish until you connect it to 12V.
It was surprisingly difficult to find a straightforward explanation of this, maybe my Google-Fu is weak.

Ok so I'm having difficulties trying to find a fascia adaptor for my car.. rang my local dealer and he said theres nothing available and then i rang Seat Customer Care who said theres nothing available which is specific to the colour of my interior (apparantly the colour is peugeot black)? I did quote part number 1P2858071AN87 but apparantly this is in 'brilliant silver'

Anyone had this problem? All I want is a surround which matches lol

You could spray the trim to match if all else fails, gloss black looks good and has been done before.

I gave the chap the VIN number you can see in the little window in the front windscreen, that seemed to do the job.

Whilst I'm here not related to this question but another point. On the Googling thing mentioned, maybe I expressed myself badly, it wasn't at all difficult to find a million hits about Fakra aerials and I never query Google with a question as you get those totally useless "How to" type pages back. The problem was the quality of the information returned, yes its the interweb and there are no guarantees but I waded through page after page of nonsense, speculation and rumour to a remarkable extent.

True but I'd rather go with the correct coloured double din surround first.

With the Philips CED1800BT all is good other than the iGO 8 sat nav software supplied being very slow, am in the process of working out if this is a setup issue, a slow micro SD card or the CPU in the Philips. Currently TomTom on my Galaxy S2 blows it out of the water.

The offical one is on order from SEAT, been about 17 days so far.
I also have one from EBay that was part of a bundle and works differently to the SEAT one (I believe) in that the Double DIN cage sits in it and you have to remove the Leon's yellow fascia receivers for the standard fascia clips as its retaining lugs are far bigger.
As I didn't want to do the second option, I have the unit currently sitting in the DIN cage inside the VW adaptor mentioned in the FAQ waiting for the Seat fascia to arrive - which I hope fits around the VW adaptor or it will be option 2 which will be a shame as the colour is not a perfect match.
None of this is complicated, just far less simple than it could be if all holes in dashes were identically sized.

Did my first long trip with the Philips CED1800BT unit and luckily I had got to the bottom of the iGO 8 sat nav problems, basically I had been told to delete all the maps and POIs that I couldn't see myself using. I had made the mistake of just deleting enough to get it running. After reading a few GPS forum posts I deleted all Maps except UK, all POIs except UK, all building files except UK, all non-English language files and all non-English voice files.
In fairness now I'd say that the iGO 8 software is pretty good, probably still prefer TomTom but that is largely a familiarity thing.

Glad you got it working ok. Are you able to restore the maps you deleted though? Just in case you go abroad?
