Check your service history book, should state engine code, gearbox code etc - Should match up if the gearbox in car has not been changed.

This mod woked for me:

It cured the clutch creep and also poor engageement of 2nd gear when cold.

Overall gear change feels more slick and precise.

does anyone actually know how much end float the shaft is supposed to have or is everyone just fitting the same thickness shim and hoping for the best?

Hi folks been reading all this thread and was just wondering what the clutch creep is and what this fix helps with and if it would be worth doing on my mrk 1 05 plate lcr. Thanks

Clutch creep is when you want to disengage the clutch by putting your foot on the pedal whilst in gear, but it doesn't and still pulls forward. Mine was doing it and it is proper annoying, but this unbelievably completely cured it.

Are the pre 2003 gearboxes without the inspection hole a compleatly different box? Or if you removed the outer metal casing on the end can you fit the shim?

i guess if you have a look at the gearbox end then you will have the black cover, its pretty obvious when you see it,just google a pic of the box.
the link posted on the vw site show the picture in where you can see what you need to go,whip outside and have a gander at your car turn the wheel far left then you will see

Yea I know my car hasn't got the inspection cap you see, what I mean is are the internals compleatly different? Or if I take the metal outer casing off on the end can I still install the shim? That would be a big help to all pre 2003 gearboxes then you see

I just fitted it and hoped for the best - didn't have any problems but I was at the dealers for the dogbone mount bolts anyway - when I took the cover off I found I could pull and push the assembly in and out a mm so installed the shim. Figure if it fits and it's not tight to get the snap ring back on again it would probably be ok :)

For the sake of £10 and 10 minutes tho - even if nothing improves its not much to lose and it might be some preventative maintenance
