Hiya - couple updates to mention - have completely redesigned the fuel system by removing the stock 45L tank and associated pumps, pipework, filler etc, and fitted a foam filled 10L jobbie (inc roll over valve) with a Bosch 044 pump and duel filters (pre pump/post pump). Pump and filters are in the spare wheel well with the tank above them so gravity feeds the pump through a large 12mm hose. Have also re-sited the dry sump oil tank so that both the fuel and oil tank can sit inside a sealed box as per MSA regulations. Dead chuffed with the results - good weight saving and better weight distribution. Took ages to fabricate everything neatly though and get the packaging right.

Have also moved the battery and fire extinguisher to get them lower down and further back, and removed a load of cable (weight) in the process.

Front brakes currently being enlarged - more details very soon but will be a substantial improvement with almost twice the pad area and a 330mm disk

I think if I'm honest I get more enjoyment from the tinkering - have actually been thinking of changing tack completely - have a desire to build my own single seater or libra car, build the chassis and everything, teach myself to braze/weld and just build something - might be a 10year project. A new challenge. Bought Staniforth's book last year called 'high speed low cost' and it details building a racer - looks ace....and probably great fun, learn the skills as I go etc

RobT; In the middle of building (another..) tarmac rallycar now. Mk2 golf. Don't underestimate how much rally cars weigh. I seem to have done nothing but add weight to the blighter preparing it to MSA 'standards'. The things that heavy it will probably struggle to pull away...............

Hiya Jon - dont you have enough cars :D - yes, rally cars do seem to have a lot of kit in them, guards etc, and generally I think they are slower than sprint cars because of this (although he drivers are usually pretty handy which can make up for a lot). But the F2 rally cars were something else.....staggering levels of development, everything bespoke - I reckon they would still be seriously fast even though they are not the lightest things out there.

I dont think my ibiza would ever be under 830kg, even with a lot more development, whilst I know for a fact some sprint hatchbacks are into the low 700's, and even 600's.

Older/lighter cars take some beating, especially in power-limited classes upto 2L. In the open class, above 2L, more modern stuff does a lot better as the engines are generally better and the weight matters a lot less comparatively.

Yes, too many, but I enjoy all aspects of motorsport, including the build and develop bit. There is always something going on here. (usually far too much..) I could have a need for a pair of 4 pots, as discussed months ago, will pm you. I remember a chat I had with an old race sage discussing vw potential race cars, and he was in broad agreement with what you have stated above. Newer is heavier, well tuned conventional 2L is formidable and probably the best bang for buck. I look at my slightly scabby mk1 sprint car with full race ABF on 45's and it fits his description. Weighs nothing, feels and looks quick.
Mk2 rally build nearing completion, although the spec is lowbrow I fully expect to have a hoot competing in it.
Must get that 1/2 built 020 with Quaiffe and 5.08:1 FD finished this week.....

Got me another couple sets of nice and light Team Dynamics wheels, and some ex-Chevrolet WTCC slicks in amazing condition. They will do nicely for shakedowns.

I'm having the windows tinted as well.

Joke.

I wish I had the uprights - but they are 2800 Euro for a pair, not including lower high tensile steel pin, bearings, or hubs. Dont have a pic of reverse to hand - basically its a lump of ali with a flat rear and a hole where the CV goes through.

Brakes nearly finished at Badger-5 HQ - custom brackets and bell/wheel spacer combo - allows fitment of 330x32mm disk and Stoptec ST40 Caliper behind 17" TD wheel, and also allows for my outer balljoint drop pins.

That should stop it. Also bought some new Stoptech 'trackday/fast road' pads as I need instant bite for sprinting and being so large for the weight of car, they should have plenty of heat capacity (previously I had these same brakes and pads on my A4 Quat which is almost double the weight of my Ibiza, and didnt fade these brakes, without air ducting, at the Ring).

Looks a lovely job Billo....damn fine engineering there at Badger-5.....anodizing only to go now
