I haven't had a light go for years but in a week I lost a rear light and a sidelight. Been replaced but just a bad omen.
Worried about my HIDs as I don't know how kindly they will take to them. Also the dipped/main beam problem. Thinking of getting two H7 bulbs and swapping them over for the HIDs just for the test. Be easier for auto electrician aswell with no HID wires around the headlight.
I copied this from the NCT manual though:
Where HID (High Intensity Discharge) bulbs are fitted switch on the headlights and check that cleaning devices such as headlamp 4. wipers or high pressure water jets are present and work. Check where possible that the headlamp levelling device is working.
HID headlamps must be installed as a complete type-approved system. The system will include automatic cleaning. HID headlamps can be recognised by:
a) the light having a bluish tinge,
b) the light taking a few seconds to reach full intensity,
c) the headlamp having an igniter module/inverter behind the headlamp,
d) the headlamp having ”DC” (for HID dipped beam), “DR” (for HID main beam), or “DCR” (if both are HID) marked on the lens. This marking should be visible from the exterior of the vehicle but in some cases the markings may be hidden under the bonnet and this may need opening to obtain a clear view.
Reasons for failure:
-HID bulb fitted in a non-HID headlamp.
-Automatic headlamp levelling device not operating or manual headlamp levelling device cannot be operated from driver’s seat.
-Mandatory headlamp cleaning device not present.
-Mandatory headlamp cleaning device not operating.
Do you know what I done? Just unclupped the bulbs from The ballasts and left ballasts in and put normal bulbs in. Can't fail you on something that is t there

I've slim ballasts so they're inside the headlights. I'll be putting H7 bulbs in aswell, don't want to chance it.
I'm getting it sorted
just not by me rang auto electrician but can't get them to pick up the fone so calling in during the week Throw in two H7 bulbs and NCT should be ok!
You got me, I have a extreme phobia of relays. I can't even look at an electrician without freaking out!
Car is all finished with the auto electrician. Here was the problem:

When I flash my lights with no lights on, only the high beam flashes. I wanted it this way so the HID bulbs didn't flash (which burns them out quickly).
Also purchased standard H7 bulbs which I will swap over before my NCT on Tuesday.

TBH I'm not entirely sure. I've looked in the engine bay but can't see any difference haha. He told me he fitted a relay to keep the dipped beam on when I turn on the main but that's all I know. I just made sure it worked and was more than happy with the job
My results differ slightly to Blanco's guide though. When I flash my lights only main beam works, not dipped and main. As o said I prefer that to save my HID bulbs.
€50 so well worth it. About £38 with the exchange rate atm. Hows the rebuild coming along mate?
