Yes i fully intend on part exchanging my 1.6 Leon and getting a TDI FR! Anyway, as i dont want to loose any more money on the trade-in i have a few problems that mr car dealer will happily knock £'s off that i would like to fix, obviously doing it myself as much as possible. Also, i dont want anyone to buy this car and have a load of problems, karma people!

Problem 1, Central locking doesn't work. I need a new key, and the whole re-programme job! Any ideas on cost? Before anyone suggests a new battery in the fob...the fob is actually broken. Also, when i open the car manually with the key, only the front two doors unlock and sometimes only one of them will do so, leaving the alarm still on, so when i get in......
I have to fanny around unlocking doors in different combinations (drivers, then passengers, then try and turn the alarm off by holding the key in there etc etc..)

Problem 2, The iconic, classic and legendary water in the footwells. I have fixed this before when it has been the seals, following the brilliant guide on here. Now though, this problem is where water has somehow soaked the drivers footwell and ran into the footwell behind.
Obviously we have had a delguge of rain in some parts of the country, so i just poured two watering can's full of water over the car and nothing got in. Maybe that test was a little inconclusive as it was only two watering cans, i'll try it again tomorrow.
3 months ago, i had the passenger footwell soaked with washer fluid which had leaked in, i got that fixed but now there's this problem! I dont think it's the door seals, but it could be.
I am rather hopeless at DIY so would appriciate some 'tests' i can do? Like the watering can.

Problem 3, Cigarette lighter won't pop out. Obviously before sat nav this wouldnt have been much of an issue especially if the owner is a non smoker too! Anyway, that's a £40 job. (Got that quoted when the washer fluid leak was fixed)

Problem 4, My door handle won't sit flush. When it was really cold 2 years ago my car froze shut, so me being me, used brut force and got the door open. In doing that i pulled the handle too far so it won't sit back how it used to.
I got that quoted at £300! New door, new locking unit and paint. I'll have to swallow that one, but obviously he wont know it's a £300 job! (I hope)

Problem 5, The cd player doesn't work! It had been cutting out and playing parts, then going silent etc...
Now, when i press it to come on, it just says "MAGAZINE" or "CHANGER" I have the 6 disc changer in the glovebox.

These in my opinion are all pretty serious grounds for knocking a lot of money off, the service history isn't 100% and it's a 12 year old car!
Apart from that it is in very good condition for the age, i do know how to wash a car well, and have a porter cable, so i might touch it up a bit before i go to view any cars.

Any general advice people? It's been a LONG time since i posted on here last. I was saving for an LCR in the past and believe it's in my signature! :D

Prob 1 buy a second hand key off ebay, change blade & responder over, have a look in faqs under flip key thread

Prob 2 dry carpets out before you go to the dealers

Prob 3 Get a cig lighter from a breaker or ebay

Prob 4 Not sure, would just replacing door handle sort it or have you damaged door ?

Prob 5 Try picking up a cheap second hand stereo

Just an update...I got a mate who happens to be a mechanic! To have a look at these problems and basically i am no better off.
The central locking is a big job and will cost plenty! Much more than i am willing to pay when i plan on trading the car in anway.

I am currently trying to dry out the carpets, using newspaper on a daily basis, now i have towels in there overnight! There is a lot of water in there! I checked the silicone that i put on there 2 years ago and it has all perished. After looking at the guide i used on here, i will use some butyl (spelling?) tape next time!

The cigarette lighter is a problem that i will go with, it's not ideal obviously but it's a £40 part, or as you say Brettyboy, a breaker would have one too.

The engine management light is the lambda sensor! £80 fix...not worth it.

CD player is a goner i think. It's got power, but just wont play. It just says "MAGAZINE" the poor thing is 11 years old and i think is beyond repair. My mechanic mate was pretty confident it's had it's day also.

All in all what do you think i could expect? The car is in good condition, clean inside and out, 4 really good tyres (all a year old) so plenty of tread. Trade in prices are £830-£890 according to Parkers, private sale around £1300-£1500 but i can't be doing with the hassle of that.
I'll take £800 but i'm not confident with the central locking being the main thing!

I would say the engine light being on is also a main thing unless they believe you or test it themselves

central locking wont cosr a fortune. i replaced all of mine forsecond hand mechanisms for less than 60 quid. you can sort the key out if you bother to read the guide. not sure how a cig lighter can cost 40 quid? look on ebay, you can get the whole things for a couple of quid.

I agree,if a dealer is thorough can't see you getting £800,its a buyers market & obviously for them to get a good price probs have got to be sorted for them to sell on,if they chuck it in for auction won't matter so much but they won't pay over the odds, also depends how much the car is your interested in buying of them & how much they want rid of it

Ok, i'm in a good position where i could actually buy a car outright without the need for a p/x.
I spoke to my uncle today and he highly advised that i put it on Auto Trader and sell it privately. I would be mad not to!

I will look into these problems and sort out as many as i can! :)

Yeah it does depend on these things, i needed a car when i bought my current one so was probably kind of obvious to the dealer.
I am in a good position now and as much as i would love an FR it will pay to be sensible and perhaps aloof, i'll keep my cards close when i go to view.
