Ah right cheers. Reason I ask is I'm doing a similar thing to my 20vt Corrado and I'm changing rods and valves but keeping the standard pistons. I'm torn between a 2871 or a 3071.
Most things I've read are standard pistons are safe up to 400 yet the guys in America seem to run more on them without issue. Reason I asked, it kind of puts my mind at ease if I decide to opt for the bigger turbo.

Bill has been up to his old tricks again and leaving nice bits out for me to find and dribble over so I thought it would be rude not to at least admire it in its natural habitat....

....anyhoo... took the chance to remake the drivers side charge pipe as Dane is having this as part of the deal with my old FMIC... the original was 60mm so seeing as I had the inlets of the new FMIC made up to 63mm I decided to make this pipework 63mm too...

I then spent the rest of the afternoon machine polishing Bill's Arosa and when I got home I started the summer detailing regime on the S3... this will take a few days of course as there is a lot to do seeing as I have been using the S3 all winter :(

Golf is going well though and finally changed the fuel tank that had an 'extra' hole in it... I can finally brim the tank without a load of it pouring back out...

Still have no idea when I will get around to changing the head over but hoping to find some time mid May... in the meantime I won't be driving the car as the rattle is getting worse as I let off the throttle... booo!!

Nice looking fmic. Have you measured the pressure drop across it at 30psi and what flow did you have in case you measured it?

Not measured flow but the core is 21 rows vs 13 rows of my previous one and IAT's are on average 5 deg over ambient compared to 12 deg on my previous one at part throttle... not logged the on boost temps as I haven't been giving her the beans due to the boost control (from previous map on previous setup) being too far out and giving me occasional boost spikes of over 2bar... I have been running just the MBC for the past week on 1.2bar boost which seems fine (if a little slow lol) but the car is now off the road until I change the head... I will do a pressure drop test when thats done and she is back on the dyno for mapping tweaks

I aim to be running 26psi max though...

I looked at Garrets compressor map for the 3071 with .63ar and found optimum pressure ratio is around 3.3 which would give me with 2psi pressure drop 28psi at the manifold. So Im tuning it for that.

Are you getting cams?

Building 20v heads is a tedious enough job but stripping one then building one is worse lol...

Anyhoo... after remembering Super Tech exhaust springs are doubles and that they have a titanium seat that doesn't pull over the bloody stem seals I just removed the ones in the old head (which buggers them a bit) to get to the seats and will have to get some new seals for the new head as while it has newish seals already fitted I don't want to risk them getting damaged when I remove them to fit the exhaust springs so that will be a job for Saturday (hoping I will find someone open!)...

Once removed from the old head I lapped them all into the new head...

...then cleaned the head in the parts washer and fitted the inlets...

...I decided to reuse my old VVT unit which is an original one rather than the ebay one... main reason for this is I inspected the unit and there was some unusual wear on the top piston of the tensioner... this could be a result of the oil pressure issues I have been having with the old head so decided to reuses the tensioner pads on the old OEM VVT unit and fit that as tbh fitting the ebay unit didn't cure the rattle so will give that a go... I have a new set of followers to fit too so if this doesn't fix the rattle I am out of ideas :(

Hoping to have the head back together tomorrow and fitted back on the car... should be in a position to start her up if all goes well...

So what do you think was causin gthe rattle then?

If I am being brutally honest there is still the slightest whiff of 'a rattle/chatter/whatever' there BUT.... the engine revs much more smoothly and the car drives much nicer now and I remember when we were working on Liams Polo that it had a similar sort of rattle so whether its just a VVT/Supertech thing (as not heard it on non VVT/Supertech setups) I don't know...

Seeing as I replaced so many parts this time around to give it a fighting chance then I am not sure of the exact culprit... there was wear on the ebay VVT unit which prompted me to stick the original back on using the ebay tensioner pads but whether this wear was a result of poor oil pressure in a 200k head or just because it was an ebay tensioner is impossible to say...

I will at some point change the VVT for a new unit although I am tempted to go non VVT simply as its only there for emissions (think I may be past worrying about that now lol) and the non VVT tensioner is 200 quid cheaper... I'll just get it coded out of the map...

After making sure all the fluids I put back into the engine were staying there I decided to crack on with changing the strut top mounts to the LCR ones I have had sat around for a while...

Basically if your strut tops poke out like the pic below then you should be thinking of changing them...

I used the LCR ones as they are stiffer than the std items that the S3 (and all other Mk4 platform VAGs for that matter) use...
Removed the offside strut first to make a start... plenty of guides on here + the interweb so I won't bother with that side of things but both struts came off surprisingly easily....

On to the near side strut and discovered that pot holes have struck again destroying the bearing..

...and explains the wear mark on the underside of the bonnet where the strut top is...

...filed the top of the damper as it was only peened over a bit and all was good...

The result of that effort is a strut top that looks like this...

...and a much more positive feel to the steering... difficult to describe if I am honest but it feels much better....

Next we got the car strapped to the dyno and thats where my luck ran out lol....

Finding it difficult to get decent boost control from the MBC at the moment... not sure why but its just not cutting it. Running the stiff spring I get 22psi fully wound in but one turn gave me 26psi!! while 26psi is the goal I would like a little more control than that and its having difficulty holding this boost level tailing off (which it shouldn't and I know it can hold boost better than that!)

For whatever reason the ECU goes rich after 6k killing turbine energy and subsequently boost/power which is visible looking at the graphs... fuelling in general is mid 12's as it should be but the boost request on the map is off the chart and it hitting low 11's after 6k is just plain odd as EGTs (measured from the EGT probe) are too low for EGT protection there but there is still calculated EGT protection in the mapping which could be the cause of this.... either way the map thats in there is so far out of whack (it was faffed about with to account for EGT issues, overcoming unknown at the time pressure drop issues etc etc...) we are going back to the first iteration from when I first had her mapped and we are going to start again from scratch...

Anyhoo... the MBC is set at an indicated 1.5/1.6 bar on my gauge and she pulls like a train... MAF is hitting 292g/s again and generally the car feels so much nicer to drive now that the head is working as it should...

Going to get in touch with the local stealers to see if I can get some coil packs from the recall then its just a case of trying to slot my car in between Bill's busy workload to get dyno time...

I am going to plumb the WMI in at some point but its not a high priority until the engines running fine and producing the power she should be without WMI...

I also plan to try the std throttle body instead of the R32 one as I want to eliminate it as a factor in this... it is possible that there is a mismatch between the R32 TB and the size of the S3 plenum... the std TB may well produce more power ultimately but we shall see soon enough when I fit it back on...

Consider this, Welly made 370bhp on a std TB and std inlet mani... the Ibiza we did recently made 447bhp with a SEM and a 70mm TB... the R32 TB is 75mm...

i have mounted an oil catch can, and now I am experiencing a blue smoke at the rear of the car when in engine brake or when i let the engine reducing the rpm by itself. for example, when in gear, at 5000 rpm, if a take the foot off the throttle pedal...the revs go down to 4000rpm-3500rpm..and then a blue smoke appears on the exhaust. I dont know if its from the oil catch can, or I have an oil pipe which spits oil in intake or inside the turbo :(

I got them from Bill @ Badger 5 through Integrated Engineering... their site says they are genuine and checking the markings suggests they are...

what solution did you use for the recirculating oil from the intake?

I currently have my PCV system venting to just behind the gearbox... I plan to fit a catch can at some point but this too will vent to atmosphere... no oil enters my engine from the PVC anymore..

Its hard enough to find the time to build project cars never mind do a build thread!

Building a SILVER s3 at the moment myself (silver is fastest! :funk:)
