I would say get the latest version you can, so 10.6 would be a good choice. I just searched for best deal and took a chance.

Do the cables on dhgate and bestofferbuy come with full versions of software? Or would I need to get software from somewhere else?

I take it doing a search for vag com 10.6 and picking the cheapest would work out ok then. How about this one:-
dhgate.com/vag-com-newest-10-6-version-car-vag-com-diagnostic/p-ff8080812d3be2aa012d7016eb0b5220.html

Just want to be sure before ordering, thanks

When I got mine through dhgate I ordered the latest version 9 which was what they were selling at the time and it came with 10.6 software. Beware though downloading a version off thus net might kill the cable. These cables are only cheap copies.

Steve, I'm assuming you've had no problems with your cable? I'm thinking of ordering one of these off DHgate as well. I don't usually go for fake stuff but all I want to do is turn on the needle sweep and maybe the door lock chirp. £200 for a genuine Micro-CAN cable seems a bit much as I doubt I would use it for anything else. I'm a bit confused though because some cheapo cables explicitly mention they do not allow setting parameters?

Probably worth the risk for less than 20 quid though.

Which specific cable (linky?) and software version should work best with my car ?

Thankyou in advance. ;)

@ morini
My cable has been fine, no problems at all. Took about 6 days to come from DHgate if I remember right.

@FR_Flavoured
The one in post #566 should be fine for you.

@adrianwood
The only thing I have with mine is I have to connect it to the laptop before the car, which is the opposite to what others have done.

Adrian, thankyou for your suggestion, going with dhgate[dot]com

However, doing a bit of research, theres alot of material on the internet to indicate that that website is a bit suspect. ie: Its not a proper online store. You order an item off there, then your purchase is matched with a handful of suppliers that might stock that item, who then takes charge of your order (usually from some far eastern country)...

But saying all this, reading through this Thread, a handful of ppl have ordered off that site, with no issues.

You are right they are not an online store but more like a Market place that deals with the international side of things. I found it very dificult to find a a cable from an Online Store, unless you want to pay for the official one. I could not fault them for delivery etc, the goods however do come direct from the supplier.

I reckon if you pay via paypal it should be ok. You can always file a dispute via paypal if the goods don't show up.

Hi guys, cheers for your speedy feedback. I'm sold! Didn't take much convincing!
I will place an order today. :)

Then just need to locate a reputable location to purchase/download the software (plus which version?). FR PD170 (07). :)

Dont download the software, use only what comes with the lead or you may well kill the lead.

Edit: ORDER PLACED! :)
Oh right - so there is 'custom' software that comes with each lead too then!

Like most here, I'm not bothered if I dont have all the functionality that SEAT might have.
Just the ability to connect up, make a few little changes here or there, and I'll be happy. :)
Plus look at any diagnostic codes could also be handy.

Does the ECU Register (count) each time a VAG COM device is connected/run ?
(could flag up when SEAT connect up themselves, and think somethings going on?).

Thankyou Steve for your feedback.

Seat dont use VAGCOM or VCDS as it is called now they use there own system. VCDs is for independant mechanic etc.

The ECU does not keep a count but if you make a change like turn on Alarm beeps then the dealer will know. Plus when ever you change anything the Module coding has to be changed and stored.

OK - so potentially the Dealer might notice changes made, and just choose to revert the current firmware back to its defaults (at worst)?
All very useful information, thankyou. :)

I think whether you need to worry about the dealer noticing will depend on whether the car is still under warranty? Myself, I would probably be inclined to revert any changes I made (like needle sweep, for instance) back to standard before taking the car in for any work. Just in case ;)

Just got a cable for my Leon and it appears I can't access the measuring blocks. (from the engine)
That is about the most important thing i wanted to do..
Also an error message appears "no rod file found" and "please make sure you have the latest software"

And that might be the problem; do have 10.6 and probably not able to update.

My Leon is 1 month old, 2.0 tdi CR dsg 140 HP.

Is someone already using 10.6 with the new 140HP CR engine?

Thanks in advance,

guys i went through this thread, and mainly noticed that most people on here are with mk2 leon's... and so many versions of the cables are mentioned that i am lost in what i need... ive got an mk1 1.6 leon sx (2004), what i need is mainly to read faults and clear them, as my engine managment light has come on, and instead of taking the car to the garage i want to find out the problem myself, and maybe fix it myself, and then obviously delete the fault... can you link me in the right direction to obtain a cable that will do the job? i'll consider all kinds, thanks a bunch, Alex

On an 04 model I would assume that any of the cables listed in this thread would work.

Most of the updates to the VCDS software just add better labels and newer module information as new ones enter usage. So you should be safe on an 2004 model.

I'm sure I will be swiftly corrected if I'm wrong!
