Fitting a new Relay #3(30) didn't make any difference.

So say hello to my crankshaft speed sensor cable.
P1060145.jpg

Now those three wires once had insulation round them.

Unfortunately the replacement new sensor I bought - offof ebay, doesn't fit. The cable housing sticks out of the oem one at 90 degrees. THe replacement does the same, but it does so nearer to the sensor so it fouls the block and won't seat in its proper position.

I got peed off with it and chopped away some plastic where the fixing screw goes to make it fit in a rotated position. I then spotted the connector end was also different :censored:, so I butchered that so it would fit the car connector.

It still won't bloody start. I'm just wondering if replacing relay #3(30) then trying to start it using the faulty crank sensor has damaged the new relay.

I can splash out on an oem crank speed sensor, but I have a feeling it won't make any difference. I'll try the old relay next.

thats a bugger dave :(
sounds like it is the crank sensor as you have no spark, but as you have changed nearly everything else, not good :(

hope you get it fixed mate, vagcom is more or less useless in my experience on mk2's, hope it does help though

Still baffled.

The coilpack connector has 3 leads. (#3) from ignition switch, (#2) from earth, (#1) from ecu.

From the connector not plugged to the coilpack, when I turn the ignition switch on, I get 12v between #3 and #2. This voltage stays while cranking. There's never a voltage between #1 and #2.

I'm guessing here that the ignition switch is ok and there's no reason to suspect the coilpack..... I'm guessing #1 should be a signal from the ecu, not a voltage returned from the coilpack....

I don't have a wiring diagram for the Simos management system..... :(

30 A fuse... dunno... just 30 Amp fuse.

*similar issue on my lads old ProJeKt OloP.. just didnt want to turn over.. turns out it was a 30 A fuse in the most in accessable place you could wish for.

It turns over John, just won't fire.

Can anyone tell me:

Does the coilpack produce HT all the time the engine is running, or does it pulse twice per engine revolution? If the latter, what gives it the signal, the crankshaft speed sensor or the hall sensor on the distributor?

Dave, sorry.. just to clarify.. laddo's Polo did turn, just no fire.. petrol smell, priming on ignition, etc, just no 'spark' of life. towed it up to my mate whos a mucky-nic.. took him a while (we had already gone through the obvious stuff like your self, even to the point of changing the coil out of the Ibiza, and daft stuff like the rotor arm etc as we were clutching at straws, then lo and behold.. a poxy two bob fuse was the cause!

damn these mk2's dave, when you think it's one things, it never really is :(

hope it gets sorted soon, my original thought was coilpack, but as you said you changed it recently thought it couldn't be, but have heard of them going quickly

good luck mate

Big thanks to Damoegan for calling at ECP to collect another coilpack for me. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference.

We then took the distributor out and took it to bits. New hall sensor ordered.

Thanks for the help Damien. :) Love the Ed30.
