looks good so far tuffty

after looking around the pag parts site do you know which manifold it was for your turbo as i cant seem to find the right one.

also what did you do about oil and water lines? custom stuff or off the shelf kit?

Just had a look myself and the only mani I could find was a T3 and mines a T25 log mani... don't know if they decided not to do T25 anymore...

Oil and water pipes came with the 'kit' but were next to useless... we modded the OEM oil drain pipe (see some of the earlier posts in this thread) and while I did use the supplied water hoses (braided with alloy fittings) they leak so when the heads comes off I will be replacing these with fabricated ones using stainless pipe and banjos...

Probably a bit late and I reckon judging by the amount of effort going into this quality build that this will have already been covered too but........I had one of those Sachs paddle plates in my Leon and it was a pig of a thing. Its OK for gear changes once rolling and for very hard take off's, but in stop-start traffic it was a complete dog - very snatchy and impossible to do a smooth start - not nice. In a petrol car maybe it won't be as bad. It lasted about 40k miles before getting very noisy which turned out to be the rivets against the flywheel! Never ever slipped though.

Awesome build and I loved my S3 (baby forces sale scenario!) so I'm a keen watcher of this one!

nice to see this coming along as mine is running sort of similer spec, are you porting and polishing the head before it gets fitted with the new valves or does it not need it? i know it will benifit it somewhat but not to sure so i will ask you as bill has been looking over you lol and you have probably asked this question already, also was there any reason for going for supertech valves overe the ferrea valves? as i heard a few people have had issues with the supertech valves.

Out of interest, what flywheel and cover did you run with it? Caney suggested this combo and to be honest the whole clutch thing for 1.8t's is a complete mind f*ck of differing opinions and combinations (at great expense typically) that the only clutch I would feel really comfortable with fitting again is an actual OEM one lol...

I am hoping that by using an OEM cover and DM flywheel with it then it should be easier to live with...

I still have the option to use a std plate if its too bad which will get me by until I can find something more suitable...

I have given the ports a flash over with the dremel to match them up a bit as the intakes on cyls 3 & 4 were a different shape to 1 & 2 for whatever reason... I removed the majority of the casting step on the sides of the inlets but not brave enough or experienced enough to venture any further... I didn't touch the roof of the inlets at all... I have also run a scotch pad into the exhausts to help prevent carbon build up... I could have opened the exhaust ports but that would effect spool (while giving better flow at higher revs) which considering I am using a T25 log mani I felt it was a pointless exercise as I have done the mods for a fast road car not a track monster... other than the new exhaust guides (a must for any head rebuild) thats it really... it didn't need a skim so all good once I have fitted all the valves and springs...

I bought the supertechs as Bill hasn't had an issue with them so good enough for me and I got them at a good price from a fellow SCN member...

nothing wrong with supertech valves..
just dont mix single groove valves with std springs/retainers, use tripple groove valves like std if not using the supertech springs - all will be well

Finally got around to sorting the EGT probe... had a bit of a shock when I got under the car though.... discovered the inboard driveshaft gaiter had kinda split.... not a major headache but one I hadn't planned on... seeing as the driveshaft needed to be removed to get the downpipe anyway it wasn't that big an issue..
20100716_CRW_4145.jpg

Got a new gaiter this morning and fitted that after being a pillock and managing to drop a ball from the joint while removing it so I just took the cv joint apart anyway and cleaned it up... moly grease is horrible stuff and seems to get everywhere lol...

Bill welded on the EGT boss and then I refitted the DP, the new lambda probe and the EGT probe after cleaning up the grease that had been spat out when the gaiter split...

EGT's are looking good on the Liquid gauge now... sits around the 550 degrees mark just poodling about, haven't had a chance to log anything yet as I need fuel but hopefully will be running back up on the dyno in the next week or so (once I get the car back from having the rain gutters resprayed) for a bit of tweaking and baselining before I proceed with fitting the large port head.... yay!

On the subject of the clutch, I was running just the paddle plate. everything else was OEM. It wasn't an organic one either - it was sintered. The flywheel was OEM DMF. The clutch I have now is fantastic. The diesels favourite seems to be the uprated Sachs kit that can take a lot of torque (410lbft) and mine is running on a new Sachs OEM DMF which I fitted at the same time. I've heard people moan about the OEM LUK equivalent but to be fair I don't know enough to say if LUK is better or worse than Sachs for the OEM parts. There are quite a few who swear by the single mass flywheel too, but for diesel it would introduce too much clatter for my liking - it has enough already!

This is the thing with clutches!!! all seems subjective and its a real pain in the arse trying to make a decision...

Hopefully this will work out ok... just have to see I guess... out of interest, is the diesel one a 240mm plate? wonder if it would fit a 20v?

Dropped my car off at the body shop this morning so they can respray my rain channels for the second time!! thankfully its still under warranty but a pain in the arse non the less... they gave me a 1.2ltr Polo as a courtesy car... brilliant!

Anyhoo... seeing as I had today off so I could do that and some work on my head I got cracking fitting the valves...

Gave the head and the ports a final polish with a scotch bright wheel and cleaned it thoroughly...

...in readiness for this little lot...
20100719_IMG_4155.jpg

Started off by lapping in the inlet valves and then fitted the exhausts which had already been done when the guides were replaced...
20100719_IMG_4162.jpg

I had a small problem with the exhaust spring lower retainers as it would appear the new guides were oversize and they would not fit over so I open them up a tad and soon had them fitted along with the steam seals...
20100719_IMG_4165.jpg

...exhaust spring set ready to be fitted... these are dual springs, std is single...
20100719_IMG_4168.jpg

...fitting the collets...
20100719_IMG_4170.jpg

...inlet spring set ready to go in...
20100719_IMG_4172.jpg

...pre-fitted the collets as I found it easier to get them seated this way with the tool I was using, they just required a little teasing with a non magnetic pointy thing (I used a cable tie!) to sit in place...
20100719_IMG_4174.jpg

...and there we have it, a blurry vision pic of the supertech valves, springs and titanium retainers fitted
20100719_IMG_4175.jpg

A good afternoons work, and now the head is essentially ready to fit which will happen sometime towards the end of next month all being well...
