So since there seems to be very little threads on the ecomotive, thought id just share my views after doing a couple of hundred miles in the past few days ;

MPG - Motorways etc averages about 65-70 depending on what speed i do, if i stick to just under 70 then its about 72mpg, if its nearer 80 then its about 66mpg. Obviously depends how hilly the roads are etc.

Normal driving - Town driving im getting about 50-60mpg, stop start seems to be its biggest downfall - or atleast my biggest downfall as im probably using 2nd gear for slightly too long which affects it quite badly.

Mixed - Average over 3 days is 65mpg and it's probably saved me about £50 in the last few days, and i still have fuel left!

Driving it - So it took quite a lot of getting used to, the strange gear ratio etc was a pain to start as my immediate reaction after using the ibiza was 1,2,3,4 and maybe 5th gear pretty sharpish, where as now its 1,2 wait for a bit 3 wait till about 35-40mph for 4 then only at really about 60 is 5th even needed where as before the ibiza would be quite happy in 5th at 35/40.

It's pretty noisey in 1st from outside, but almost no engine noise inside, no loud road noise either and it's pretty smooth to drive. Doesn't handle quite as well as the ibiza for corners at speed, but nothing majorly bad about it. Really comfortable for longer drives too, nice giant footrest compared to the ibiza that normal sized feet can actually fit in instead of pixie sized feet, helps loads, and i find i get alot less leg pain from long journeys.

The trip computer advises you when you should change up or down a gear as well, which made it loads easier to get used to the gear ratios as well.

Features - So it came with the USB port and the Aux in, USB port is awesome for an external HDD or usb memory stick, really easy to navigate all the menus on the radio and change folders or tracks with the full track name displayed. Only bad side is you have to shelve out a lot of money to connect the iphone properly to it (iphone dock is £85, cable is £45) But it's not too drastic as the external HDD can hold 500gb of music instead of 16gb so its not necessarily a bad thing.

Communications system is awesome now i've sorted it all out (had a few teething problems with the bluetooth and the iphone, but its all sorted now) Being able to call recent contacts / anyone in your phonebook within a few seconds is pretty awesome, the call quality is crystal clear (i had the motorolla hands free kit, and it was pretty patchy) It also has caller id display etc, so its pretty good for that.

Trip computer - Standard trip computer really, with fuel remaining / average mpg / distance travelled etc along with a "set maximum speed limit" which warns you if you go over a certain speed - Quite good considering the speedo is pretty weird with 30 and 70 quite hard to tell where they are from the first few days.

All in all it's pretty good so far, nothing to complain about, and it's a nice drive, cheap and shouldn't cost a packet to run. The glove box is pointless though, i think you could fit about 3 dvd cases in it and thats about it! Insurance on it is super cheap (group 6) and the NCAP etc for it is really good, pillar airbags and airbags on the seats / roof at the back i believe.

EDIT : Just because i did a 8 mile journey into town -

A very good review there thanks, I may consider an Eco for my next Leon...

Does yours have the newer 1.6TDI or the 1.9 TDI unit?

How intrusive is the change up indicator, It's the one thing that I think would annoy me about the car.

Also, what tyres do they fit to it from new?

Tis the 1.9 TDI (£35 roadtax)

Change up indicator is pretty small (same size as the time on the above image, but on the right hand side) Not noticeable unless your looking at it.

Tyres on the 09 facelift are pnero zeros i believe. (i'll check in the morning for you)

Good mpg figures in contrast our FR TDI will do 55 mpg on the motorway and according to the compter the current average is 46 mpg with town and fast road driving. 5th at 40mph I can get 68mpg with very little grumble from the engine, 65mph and the economy is 60mpg. Not as good as the ecomotive but not far behind and not bad for a 170Bhp diesel. Almost two cars in one can be very docile if you folllow the gearchange indiactor but a beast if you use some revs :) It was not brought for economy though :p

Ecomtive seems very good indeed and will be interested to hear about the mpg of the 1.6 CR in contrast to the 1.9 PDi. Muche better then my Effcient dynamics 118d which I have to admit was always disapointed with mpg wise and stop start was ok once you got use to it.

I've found the main thing that seems to screw up the mpg is 1st gear as it just feels like it has no power compared to a petrols 1st gear.

Constant stop start in heavy traffic got me 45mpg home (ibiza was around 25), and got about 60 going into work this morning (into work is all slightly downhill, back is all slightly uphill)

average since the car was registered (12k miles ago) is showing 58.7mpg and since it was a courtesy car i think that may be a bit low, as no one really treats a courtesy car with respect!

The gear change is on the top right of this, it shows an arrow with up or down when you need to change gear.

My other half wants one of these I was just a bit worried about it being a bit gutless?
But i have been told that they are reasonably nippy is this the case?

I've only really got the 1.4 Ibiza, 1.2 polo and 1.2 corsa to compare it against, but with the 1.4 ibiza (100bhp) the ecomotive is 105bhp, but definately feels alot nippier, 1st gear is a bit ****, but after that everything is pretty lively, the turbo makes a huge difference, have been able to get off sliproads onto busy motorways / bypasses alot easier than i could before as it has a bit of an extra kick. Definately a nice car, and if you dont want to drive economically you can and just treat it like a normal car, or if you want to save money (like me at the moment) you can go by the recommended gear changes.

Go have a test drive in one of them, i reckon you will like it!

Although i believe its now mainly the 1.6 they are pushing now and not the 1.9

Great Review and the economy on offer from the Leon is clearly a big draw for those of us who do loads of driving (British Gas purchased 500 of these cars).

How many miles to the tank then - 750+?

Seen a review last week for the new BMW 320 ecomotive, delivering upto 80mpg - impressive stuff, for a 28k car.

Happy Driving
Mike
FRTDI170 (54mpg on a steady trip and 38mpg when having fun - around 530 miles per tank).

A friends got the same car (well the non s) but its effectively the same, and he got 670 miles from a tank driving down to birmingham and back going at around 80mph

I've only just hit the 1/4 so il update when the red light comes on as to how many miles its managed to do. Probably about 650-700 with all this town driving recently.

The main point thats good about the leon over the BMW's is the insurance is sooo much cheaper. I guess if you wanted to milk the system, you buy the 1.6 ecomotive then remap it - no more road tax and you get the performance of a standard leon / remapped leon.

If it makes that the ED stuff in the BMW's does work but does not seem to quite hit the quoted figures my FL ED 118d should of been high 50's but always averaged 47 our FR TDi is already at 46 so go figure??????

wow, the good old days of diesel. Even my old 150 diesel did pretty well on the economy compared with the petrol. I envy you :)

I bet you'd be suprised at the range, I can get 650 from mine if I drive carefully, but one review in a magazine got 930 from the 1.9 Eco....

I'm suprised by the tyres on your leon, I never thought of the Pirellis as 'low rolling resistance' as is often advetised as one of the ways in which the car is good on fuel... In fact my economy improved when I ditched the P7's that came with the car for Goodyear NCT5, I'm looking at the new Efficient grip now...

Unless SEAT have re-written their computer software on the FL model, you won't be seeing figures in the #2 display for 12k of driving - there's a hard limit to the amount of data the computer can record - 1000 miles, 24 hours etc - as soon as any of these values are reached the counter resets and starts again.

Says the average is based on 48 hours of driving so i guess maybe slightly more than 1000?

Views on tyre handling / grip

Dry weather - no problems
wet weather - no difference really (except cobbles)
Slush/snow - definately handles well in the snow and slush, could actually get up my road as apposed to the usual abandonment that the ibiza had.
