Well I must admit that the info I've got is from bikers, and we're talking people who've been riding for 30 years, so they know better than I do

Anyway, the reasons, and this comes from the
experts, is that the oil does squat until it gets up to temperature, so it's causing excessive wear. It takes longer to warm up than if you drive gently and if you leave it idling for a long time on a cold day it will take ages to get up to temperature, doing damage every revolution, yet a couple of minutes driving will get it to an acceptable temperature without inducing excessive damage, and quicker. Basically, it's all about the amount of damage that you do. They say that leaving it idling, especially on cold days will do more damage than just driving off, which is why I've always driven/ridden off within a minute of starting up, though I wouldn't cane it for a bit
