Hmm, don't like to leave cold engines idling TBH. Does more damage that gently driving while cold

Errr no it doesnt lol,, it allows the oil pressure to build up, only diffrence is you may get a slight carbon build up but if you run it on 98ron and give it a nice blast now and again its not a problem. I never jump in and driver, allways good 2 - 3 mins to let it get oil round etc.

Well I must admit that the info I've got is from bikers, and we're talking people who've been riding for 30 years, so they know better than I do :D I don't see that bike and car engines are that different are they?

Anyway, the reasons, and this comes from the experts, is that the oil does squat until it gets up to temperature, so it's causing excessive wear. It takes longer to warm up than if you drive gently and if you leave it idling for a long time on a cold day it will take ages to get up to temperature, doing damage every revolution, yet a couple of minutes driving will get it to an acceptable temperature without inducing excessive damage, and quicker. Basically, it's all about the amount of damage that you do. They say that leaving it idling, especially on cold days will do more damage than just driving off, which is why I've always driven/ridden off within a minute of starting up, though I wouldn't cane it for a bit

2-3 mins isnt a long time and allows adiquate oil circulation. If you use the right viscousity of oil then cold starts shouldent pose a threat to any engine. Granted oil is thinner when warm but with the correct oil your still allowing the oil to circulate. Bike engines are diffrent in may ways, fair play there this a 4 stroke engine, but the whole engine is diffrent in the sense that they normaly share the gear oil and engine oil, have a wet clutch, indipendant throttle bodies etc. Same as 2 stoke bikes you need to let them warm up, but not to excess as you then start to get excessive carbon build up. End of the day its personal prefrence.

Yeah, those differences are quite right. As I say, it's the way I've always been told to run a 4 stroke bike engine, and I keep reading the same from so called experts. The only exceptions are the highly tuned engines used in racing, and I believe they like to put fresh, preheated oil in to those engines anyway don't they? Because of the tolerances they're working to

Also turbos are diffrent as you want an adiquite ammount of oil flowing to the turbo before you start driving bikes dont have turbos. Like truck drivers they let them warm up before driving.

I noticed that my LCR seems to have a recurring 'fault' where it seems to loose power for a second while accelerating, usually in first.

Take this for example; I turn out of the bottom of my street on to a hill (going up). I accelerate and you feel the revs and power rise, and then it seems to tail off really quickly for a second, and then come back on. It's as if I've lifted off of the accelerator really quickly and then come back on again.

It's done it for a while, and there were no codes showing in VAG-COM when we checked it. Have been round to WiseJason's today and had it on VAG-COM to enable the auto-locking doors and forgot to ask about checking it. It did it as I was leaving his too.

Seems to be OK once you get going. I've not knowingly experienced limp-mode, so I don't know if this is that or not. Does it sound familiar?

I had this same problem with mine. After changing various parts but still being exactly the same the fix was to re-calibrate the throttle body. Although i has previously done this i hadnt cleaned it out first with brake/carb cleaner then re-calbrated it. Done this and has been sweet as a nut ever since.

I know what you mean it makes you look as if you cant drive:lol:

I forgot to say if the body is dirty inside you will need a small paint brush to aid getting the crap off aswell as the cleaner.

OK, cheers Charlie. I've never reset the throttle bodies but I've seen the video on how to. I'm sure I can find a helpful local member who would do it with VAG-COM :D (Cheers Jason...)

No worries mate its a quick job... ;)

I got a gasket from David @ Sere for less than a couple of quid and cleaned mine before resetting it the first time. But I could try GSF for ya as it is a two minute walk from work...

I can either simply reset or we can whip it off and give it a clean if you want? I used carb cleaner from Halfords and cuetips for the stubborn bits near the butterfly.

Ha ha, you got the question before I even got the chance to actually ask

Whatever you think is best mate, you know I appreciate anything and everything. Maybe try just a reset and see if that helps? Then again, I don't know if it's ever been cleaned, so it could be really rough by 97k miles!

Its a really quick job to clean the TB. You'd be done inside of 30 minutes and that includes the cuppa tea with necessary self praise! I'll find the before and after pics of mine that I did at 80k.

Could do a straight forward TB reset SAT or SUN afternoon first if you want?

When I took mine off the gasket was fine but I replaced it anyway becuase it only cost pence. Might even be a stock item at VW on the Chesterfield Rd.

I'll have to let you know. On Sunday I'm off to get the brakes looked at in the morning and I need to be home for 1pm for some reason, I forget what. Saturday will be busy with shopping, some family photo thing the Mrs wants to do, and then I've got to go look at the brother-in-law's computer (got his first virus) and bring him back for dinner. Somewhere in the middle of all of that I need to go fetch some fresh fish and make sushi. So, basically, it depends on how much time I have spare... not expecting a lot TBH, but thanks for the offer. As I say, I'll let you know

No worries mate any evening or weekend afternoon that suits you...

Mine was bad before it was cleaned and I was suffering with tickover and cold morning rev issues.
